Why Dive Antigua in May?

May is an excellent month for scuba diving in Antigua, especially if you want warm water, good visibility and a more relaxed atmosphere. The main winter rush has eased, yet the island still enjoys plenty of sunshine and pleasantly warm days. You can spend the morning beneath the surface and the afternoon enjoying a quiet beach or a cool drink by the harbour.

Sea temperatures are typically around 27°C, so most divers are comfortable in a light wetsuit or rash vest. Visibility can be very good, often giving you a clear view across reefs, rocky walls and sandy seabeds. May also sits before the wetter part of the year, although brief showers are always possible in the tropics.

What You Might See

Antigua’s underwater scenery is varied enough to keep returning divers interested. Shallow coral gardens are ideal for beginners and relaxed snorkelling, while deeper sites reveal swim-throughs, drop-offs and interesting rock formations. Look closely and you may spot colourful parrotfish, angelfish, wrasse and trumpetfish moving around the reef.

Turtles are a particular favourite, and rays sometimes glide over the sandy bottom with almost no movement at all. Reef sections can also attract barracuda and larger schooling fish. Your dive guide will know where conditions are best on the day and can help you find the smaller creatures, including seahorses, nudibranchs and well-camouflaged crabs.

Diving for All Abilities

Antigua is well suited to a range of experience levels. New divers can take introductory lessons or complete a certification course in sheltered water, followed by a straightforward reef dive. Qualified divers can choose from boat dives, gentle coastal sites and more challenging locations when the sea conditions allow.

May is a useful time for a flexible diving holiday because local operators can select sites according to wind, swell and visibility. Centres generally provide equipment hire, guides and instruction, so you do not need to bring every piece of kit from home. It is sensible to book early if you need a course or specialist equipment, while leaving some space in your itinerary for weather-friendly dive days.

Plan Your May Trip

Base yourself near English Harbour, Jolly Harbour or another coastal area with easy access to dive operators and boat departures. English Harbour is especially appealing if you enjoy combining diving with historic sights, lively restaurants and an evening stroll around Nelson’s Dockyard. Antigua’s beaches are spread across the island, so a hire car can be useful for exploring between dives.

Allow plenty of time between diving and flying, and follow your instructor’s advice about hydration, sun protection and surface intervals. With warm seas, inviting reefs and the friendly pace of island life, a May diving holiday in Antigua can be both adventurous and refreshingly easy-going.
