Start in Havana
Havana is an exciting place to begin a Cuba backpacking holiday. Spend your first few days wandering through the cobbled lanes of Habana Vieja, where grand colonial buildings, lively squares and classic American cars create a wonderfully distinctive atmosphere. Stop for a strong Cuban coffee, listen to live music drifting from an open doorway and let the city’s rhythm guide you.
There is plenty to do without spending much. Walk along the Malecón at sunset, visit Plaza de la Revolución and explore the markets for local crafts and snacks. Casa particulares, Cuba’s friendly family-run guesthouses, are often a comfortable and affordable alternative to large hotels, giving you the chance to meet local people and enjoy home-cooked food.
