Cuba Backpacking February

Caribbean Holidays, Cuba Backpacking February, A backpacker walking through a colourful colonial street in Havana, Cuba, with classic American cars and warm February sunshine

Why Visit Cuba in February

February is one of the best months for a backpacking holiday in Cuba. The weather is generally warm, sunny and comfortably dry, with cooler evenings that make exploring cities and travelling between destinations much easier. It is a popular time to visit, but Cuba is large enough to offer plenty of quieter corners away from the main resorts.

This is a brilliant season for seeing the country at its most varied. You can wander through Havana’s faded-colonial streets, swim in clear Caribbean water and hike in lush countryside, often within the same trip. Travelling independently also gives you the freedom to stay longer in places that capture your interest.

Start in Lively Havana

Begin in Havana, where music, history and everyday Cuban life fill the streets. Spend time in Habana Vieja, admiring grand squares, restored buildings and small cafés, then walk along the Malecón as the sun begins to set. The city is easy to explore on foot, and getting slightly lost is often part of the experience.

For a more local stay, choose a casa particular, the Cuban version of a guesthouse. Your hosts can recommend family-run restaurants, arrange transport and point you towards neighbourhood bars where live music continues well into the evening. February’s pleasant temperatures are ideal for combining relaxed sightseeing with long walks.

Explore Valleys and Mountains

From Havana, head west to Viñales, a memorable stop for backpackers. The valley is framed by dramatic limestone hills and bright green tobacco fields, with trails leading through farms and small villages. You can hire a local guide, cycle between viewpoints or simply enjoy the slower pace of rural Cuba.

Further east, the Sierra Maestra offers a different kind of adventure. Walking routes pass through forested mountain landscapes and historic revolutionary sites, while the surrounding towns provide a glimpse of Cuba beyond its famous beaches. February’s lower rainfall makes it a particularly good month for outdoor activities.

Finish by the Caribbean Sea

After travelling inland, make time for Cuba’s coast. Varadero is convenient and has a long, beautiful beach, while destinations such as Cayo Jutías, Playa Larga and Trinidad’s nearby coastline offer a more independent feel. Pack a snorkel if you can, as the warm, clear water reveals colourful fish close to shore.

Trinidad is especially worthwhile, combining cobbled streets and colourful houses with easy access to beaches and countryside. Stay for a few nights, listen to live salsa in a small venue and enjoy the relaxed rhythm of the town before continuing your journey.

Practical Backpacking Advice

February is a busy travel month, so book popular casas particulares and long-distance transfers in advance, especially around weekends. Carry some cash, as card facilities can be limited, and keep smaller notes for buses, taxis and refreshments. Pack light clothing, comfortable walking shoes, a light layer for cooler evenings and strong sun protection.

Allow plenty of time between destinations, as Cuban transport can be slower and less predictable than you may expect. That is part of the charm: a delayed bus or shared taxi may lead to an unexpected conversation and a better understanding of local life. With a flexible plan and an open mind, Cuba in February makes an unforgettable backpacking adventure.
