Curacao Walking Holidays

Why Walk Curaçao in April?

April is an excellent month for a walking holiday in Curaçao. The island is warm, bright and generally dry, with refreshing trade winds helping to take the edge off the midday heat. It is a good time to explore on foot before the hotter summer months arrive.

Curaçao offers much more than beach resorts. Walkers can combine rugged coastline, quiet country lanes, colourful Willemstad and striking desert-like landscapes in one trip. Routes range from gentle waterfront strolls to more energetic trails through hills and protected nature areas, so it is easy to create an itinerary that suits your pace.

Coastal Trails and Views

The island’s western side is especially rewarding for walkers. Trails around Bandabou lead towards secluded bays, rocky viewpoints and beaches where the sea shifts from deep blue to brilliant turquoise. Keep an eye out for iguanas, tropical birds and the island’s distinctive tall cacti along the way.

Some coastal paths are uneven and exposed, so sturdy walking shoes, sun protection and plenty of water are essential. Start early when possible, allowing time to stop at a quiet beach or viewpoint. The breeze can make the weather feel comfortable, but the Caribbean sun remains strong even when the air feels mild.

Christoffel National Park

Christoffel National Park is one of Curaçao’s highlights for active visitors. Several marked routes pass through dry forest and rocky terrain, while higher trails offer broad views across the island and the Caribbean Sea. The climb towards Mount Christoffel is a memorable challenge for reasonably fit walkers.

For the best experience, arrive early and check local access advice before setting out. The steepest routes can be hot later in the day, and some may be restricted during particularly dry conditions. Even the easier trails provide an excellent introduction to Curaçao’s unusual plants, geology and wildlife.

Willemstad on Foot

Allow time to explore Willemstad at a relaxed pace. Stroll across Queen Emma Bridge, browse the floating market and wander through the historic districts of Punda and Otrobanda. The pastel façades, narrow lanes and waterfront cafés make the capital ideal for an unhurried day between longer walks.

April is also a pleasant month for combining sightseeing with lunch outdoors. Pause for a cool drink, local seafood or a snack influenced by the island’s Dutch, Caribbean and Latin American heritage. The city’s compact centre means you can see plenty without needing a car.

Planning Your Walking Break

Choose accommodation that gives easy access to both the coast and the island’s main roads, particularly if you want to visit several trail areas. A hire car is useful for reaching national parks and quieter western beaches, while taxis and organised excursions can work well for shorter stays.

Pack lightweight clothing, a hat, sun cream, insect repellent and a refillable water bottle. Mix active mornings with leisurely afternoons by the sea, and you will have time to appreciate Curaçao’s scenery without rushing. With its reliable April sunshine, varied landscapes and welcoming atmosphere, the island makes a distinctive and enjoyable walking holiday destination.
