Dominica in March

Caribbean Holidays, Dominica in March, Backpacker walking through lush rainforest on Dominica in March, with volcanic mountains and tropical greenery

Why Visit Dominica in March?

March is an excellent month for a backpacking holiday in Dominica. The island is warm, green and full of life, while the comfortable dry-season weather makes it easier to plan days outdoors. Expect daytime temperatures of around 28°C, with refreshing breezes along the coast and cooler air in the highlands.

Dominica feels different from the more developed Caribbean islands. It is known as the Nature Island, and that name quickly makes sense when you see steep forested valleys, black-sand beaches, waterfalls and clear rivers sharing the landscape. Travelling here is less about sitting beside a large resort and more about discovering somewhere at your own pace.

Begin in Roseau

Roseau is a practical and lively base for starting your trip. Spend a morning exploring the market, where stalls are piled with bananas, mangoes, spices and local vegetables, then wander through the historic streets before stopping for a simple Creole lunch.

Backpackers will find guesthouses, small hotels and family-run accommodation within easy reach of the town centre. Roseau is also useful for arranging guides, transport and boat trips. Take time to chat with local people, as their knowledge can lead you to quiet swimming spots and lesser-known viewpoints.

Rainforest Adventures

March is ideal for exploring Dominica’s walking trails. The Trafalgar Falls route is a popular introduction, leading through thick rainforest to two dramatic cascades. Nearby hot springs provide a relaxing way to warm up after a walk, particularly when the mountain air feels fresh.

For a bigger challenge, consider part of the Waitukubuli National Trail, which crosses the island from north to south. You do not need to complete the full route to enjoy it. Choose a manageable section, wear sturdy footwear and carry water, as paths can be steep and slippery even during the drier months.

Coast and Underwater Life

Dominica’s coastline is just as rewarding as its interior. Champagne Reef, near Soufrière, is famous for warm volcanic bubbles rising through the sea, creating a memorable snorkelling experience. Colourful fish and coral can be seen close to shore, making this a convenient stop for independent travellers.

Boat trips may also take you along the western coast, where dolphins and whales are sometimes spotted. March can offer good conditions on the water, but sightings are never guaranteed. Pack a waterproof bag for your camera and leave time for an unplanned swim or a quiet afternoon beside a secluded beach.

Planning Your Trip

Pack light, but bring quick-drying clothes, a waterproof jacket, insect repellent and reliable walking shoes. Local buses are affordable and useful on main routes, although they do not always follow a fixed timetable. Hiring a car gives you more freedom, especially if you want to visit remote trails and villages.

March is a popular time to visit, so book key accommodation and guided walks ahead where possible. Leave plenty of flexibility in your itinerary, though. Dominica is at its best when you can pause for roadside fruit, follow the sound of a waterfall or stay longer in a village that catches your interest.
