May Scuba Diving

Why Dive in May?

May is an excellent time for a Caribbean scuba diving holiday. The busy winter season is easing, so beaches and dive sites often feel pleasantly relaxed, while the weather remains warm and inviting. Sea temperatures are comfortable in most destinations, making it easy to enjoy longer dives without feeling chilled.

Visibility can be impressive at this time of year, with calm conditions offering clear views of coral gardens, reef fish and fascinating underwater terrain. May also brings good value to many resorts, so you may be able to combine a high-quality diving experience with attractive accommodation and fewer crowds.

Choosing Your Island

Every Caribbean island has its own character beneath the waves. Barbados is known for wrecks, reefs and easy access to dive sites, while Grand Cayman offers famously clear water, dramatic walls and excellent chances to see turtles and rays. Bonaire is a favourite for independent divers, with shore diving that lets you explore at your own pace.

For a lively holiday with plenty to do above the water, consider destinations such as Jamaica or the Dominican Republic. If you prefer a quieter escape, smaller islands can provide peaceful beaches, friendly local dive centres and uncrowded reefs. Your choice will depend on whether you want relaxed shore dives, adventurous boat trips or a mixture of both.

What You Can See

Caribbean waters are full of life, even on relatively shallow dives. Look out for bright parrotfish, angelfish and butterflyfish moving through the coral, along with curious turtles resting near the reef. Nurse sharks, eagle rays and barracuda may also appear, depending on the location and season.

Wreck diving adds another dimension to a May break. Sunken ships have become artificial reefs, covered in sponges and visited by schools of fish. Experienced divers can explore deeper walls, tunnels and swim-throughs, while beginners will find plenty of colourful sites where the focus is simply on enjoying the view.

Planning Your Diving Holiday

Choose a reputable dive centre with qualified instructors, well-maintained equipment and small groups where possible. If you have not dived recently, a refresher session is a sensible way to rebuild confidence before heading to deeper water. Many resorts also offer beginner courses, so you can learn at a comfortable pace in warm, welcoming surroundings.

Allow time between your final dive and flying home, and remember to pack reef-safe sun cream, a rash vest and a light layer for boat trips. Outside the water, May is ideal for combining diving with beach time, local food and island sightseeing. With warm seas, appealing prices and a quieter atmosphere, it is a superb month to discover the Caribbean below the surface.
