October Diving

Caribbean Holidays, October Diving, Scuba diver exploring a colourful Jamaican coral reef in clear Caribbean water during October

Why Dive in October?

Jamaica in October offers warm seas, tropical scenery and a quieter underwater experience than the busiest holiday months. Sea temperatures are usually around 28°C, so a light wetsuit or rash vest is often all you need while exploring the reefs.

October falls within Jamaica’s wetter season, but showers are commonly brief and followed by bright sunshine. Dive centres keep a close eye on local conditions, and there are often plenty of calm days for enjoyable boat trips and shore dives. Fewer visitors can also mean smaller groups and a more relaxed pace.

Where to Dive

Montego Bay is a popular base for scuba diving in Jamaica, with sites close to the coast and a good choice of experienced operators. Reefs, pinnacles and gently sloping walls are home to parrotfish, angelfish, barracuda and large shoals of smaller reef fish.

Negril is another excellent option, particularly if you enjoy dramatic underwater scenery. The area is known for clear visibility, coral gardens and wall dives where the seabed drops away into deeper blue water. Many sites are suitable for newer divers, while experienced visitors can choose deeper and more challenging excursions.

Port Antonio and the quieter eastern coastline offer a more secluded diving atmosphere. Conditions and available trips vary, so it is sensible to check in advance, especially if you have a particular site or type of dive in mind.

What You Might See

Jamaica’s reefs are full of life, even on a relatively short dive. Look closely among the coral for cleaner shrimp, tiny crabs and bright damselfish, while larger species may appear in the open water. Sea turtles are sometimes spotted gliding over the reef, and rays can be seen resting on sandy patches.

October can be a rewarding month for underwater photography because the warm, clear water makes it comfortable to spend time observing the reef. Visibility varies with weather and location, but many dives offer impressive views across coral formations, sponges and rocky drop-offs.

Planning Your Dive Holiday

Choose a reputable dive centre with qualified instructors, well-maintained equipment and a clear approach to weather decisions. If you are travelling with a buddy, tell the centre what experience you have and the sort of diving you enjoy. This helps the team select suitable sites and arrange equipment before you arrive.

It is also worth leaving flexibility in your itinerary. October showers may occasionally affect boat departures, so avoid booking important flights immediately after your final dive and follow recommended surface intervals. With a little planning, scuba diving in Jamaica during October can combine warm Caribbean waters, fascinating marine life and the easy-going atmosphere that makes the island so appealing.
