Martinique Cycling

Why Cycle Martinique in February?

February is one of the best months for a Martinique cycling holiday. The island is warm, bright and pleasantly dry, while temperatures usually sit around 24 to 29°C. It is ideal weather for exploring by bike, especially if you set off early and leave the hotter part of the afternoon for a leisurely lunch or a swim.

Martinique offers far more variety than a simple beach break. In one ride you can pass sugar-cane fields, volcanic hills, quiet fishing villages and sweeping coastal views. The island’s French road signs and generally good network of paved roads make independent cycling straightforward, although the terrain can be demanding in places.

Routes Through Mountains and Rainforest

Strong riders will enjoy the north, where roads rise towards Mount Pelée and wind through some of Martinique’s richest scenery. The climbs are steady rather than rushed, and the reward is a succession of cool forest sections, mountain viewpoints and villages with a distinctly local feel.

For a more relaxed day, consider cycling around the central and southern parts of the island. Routes near Le François, Le Robert and Sainte-Anne combine gentler stretches with attractive coastal scenery. Take time to stop at a roadside fruit stall, refill your water bottle and watch the changing colours of the sea.

Coastal Rides and Beach Stops

Martinique’s southern coast is particularly appealing for easy-going cycling holidays. The roads around Sainte-Anne lead towards sandy beaches, small coves and the famous Salines area, where a ride can be combined with a refreshing swim. This is a lovely option for couples or mixed-ability groups who want plenty of time away from the saddle.

East-coast routes bring a different atmosphere, with open Atlantic views and breezy roads around the island’s bays. Conditions can change quickly, so carry light waterproofs and check your route before leaving. February is usually settled, but a brief tropical shower is always possible.

Food, Culture and Practical Tips

Plan your rides around Martinique’s excellent food. Creole dishes such as grilled fish, accras, chicken colombo and fresh fruit are perfect after an active morning. Fort-de-France is a good base for combining cycling with markets, museums and a relaxed evening in the capital.

Bring a helmet, high-factor sun cream, sunglasses and plenty of water. A road bike or hybrid is useful, while lower gears are important if you plan to tackle the northern hills. Whether you prefer challenging climbs or scenic beach rides, February gives you a superb chance to experience Martinique at an enjoyable pace.
