June Birdwatching

Birdwatching in June

June is a rewarding time for a birdwatching holiday in Saint Martin and Sint Maarten. The islands are warm, green and full of life, with early mornings offering the best combination of comfortable temperatures and active birds. Whether you are an experienced birder or simply enjoy wildlife and peaceful scenery, you can spend your days exploring wetlands, hillsides, beaches and gardens at an easy pace.

June also brings the start of the wetter season, so occasional showers are possible. These are often brief and refreshing, leaving the landscape looking brighter and making water sources especially attractive to birds. Pack a light waterproof jacket, sun protection and comfortable walking shoes, then set out before breakfast while the air is cool and the bird calls are at their liveliest.

Wetlands and Mangroves

Roseau Pond, on the French side of the island, is one of the most useful places to begin a June birdwatching itinerary. This protected wetland and its surrounding mangroves provide feeding and resting areas for herons, egrets, sandpipers and other waterbirds. Move quietly along the edges and scan the shallows, mudflats and low branches rather than looking only across open water.

The Great Salt Pond in Sint Maarten offers another excellent setting, particularly when the light is soft in the morning or late afternoon. Shorebirds can be seen around the margins, while gulls, terns and frigatebirds may pass overhead. A guide can help you identify less familiar species and explain how the island’s salt ponds support wildlife as well as local history.

Gardens and Woodland

Not every good sighting requires a long walk. Hotel gardens, quiet lanes and mature trees can attract bananaquits, doves, pearly-eyed thrashers and hummingbirds. Spend a few unhurried minutes near flowering plants and listen for movement in the canopy. Small birds are often easier to observe when you stay still and let them come to you.

Higher ground around Pic Paradis and other wooded slopes gives you a different perspective on the island. The trails can be uneven, particularly after rain, but the views are rewarding and the vegetation is varied. Go with a local guide if you want to explore confidently, as they know the best lookouts and can point out birds hidden in dense foliage.

A Relaxed Island Routine

A successful June birdwatching holiday does not need to be rushed. Begin with a dawn outing, return for breakfast and a swim, then choose a shady garden, coastal path or wetland for a second session later in the day. This flexible routine leaves plenty of time to enjoy the island’s beaches, cafés and distinctive blend of French and Dutch Caribbean culture.

Take binoculars, a field guide and plenty of water, and keep a simple record of what you see. Respect nesting areas, avoid disturbing birds and follow local access advice, especially around protected ponds. With warm weather, varied habitats and plenty of comfortable places to stay, Saint Martin and Sint Maarten make June an inviting choice for a Caribbean birdwatching holiday.
