Diving in May

May is an excellent month for a scuba diving holiday in Saint Martin and Sint Maarten. The islands sit at the heart of the Caribbean, with warm seas, bright sunshine and a relaxed atmosphere that makes it easy to settle into holiday mode. By May, the busiest winter period has eased, yet the island’s dive centres, restaurants and beach bars are still lively and welcoming.

Water temperatures are typically around 27°C, so most divers are comfortable in a lightweight wetsuit or rash vest. Visibility can be very good, often reaching 20 metres or more, although conditions vary between sites. Calm mornings are particularly enjoyable for boat trips, when the sea is usually smooth and the underwater scenery is crisp and inviting.

Easy Access to Dive Sites

One of the great advantages of diving around Saint Martin and Sint Maarten is the variety of sites within easy reach. Local operators run trips to reefs, walls, wrecks and sheltered bays, with options for beginners, experienced divers and groups with mixed abilities. Many excursions take only a short time to reach the dive site, leaving more of the day for relaxing on shore.

Experienced instructors and guides know the local conditions well and can match each diver to suitable locations. New divers may prefer calm, shallow reefs where colourful fish are easy to spot, while qualified divers can look for deeper walls, swim-throughs and the distinctive underwater landscapes around nearby islands. Equipment hire and refresher sessions are widely available.

What You Can See

The reefs around Saint Martin and Sint Maarten are home to a rewarding mix of marine life. Look out for angelfish, parrotfish, wrasse and schools of smaller reef fish weaving through coral and sea fans. Turtles are also seen in the area, while eagle rays, barracuda and southern stingrays may appear on the deeper or more open sites.

Some dive sites feature rocky outcrops and coral-covered wreckage, creating shelter for moray eels, lobsters and shy reef creatures. May is a good time to spend longer in the water, as the warm conditions and generous daylight make it possible to enjoy a morning dive followed by a leisurely afternoon on one of the islands’ beaches.

A Complete Island Holiday

Scuba diving is only part of the appeal. Saint Martin and Sint Maarten share one island but offer two distinct characters, with French and Dutch influences, excellent food and a wide choice of beaches. After diving, you could enjoy fresh seafood in Grand Case, explore Philipsburg’s shops or watch the sunset from a quiet stretch of sand.

May also brings a pleasant balance between good weather and a more unhurried pace. Speak to a reputable local dive centre before travelling, check which sites suit your experience and allow time to enjoy the island above the water. With warm seas, varied underwater scenery and plenty to do between dives, Saint Martin and Sint Maarten make an appealing choice for a Caribbean scuba diving holiday.
