Snorkelling in Paradise

Few Caribbean holiday experiences are as easy and rewarding as snorkelling. Slip into the warm, clear sea from a beach or boat trip and you can soon be watching parrotfish, angelfish and small reef creatures moving through the coral. The shallow bays around many islands are ideal for beginners, while guided excursions take you to quieter reefs away from the busiest beaches.

Pack a mask and fins if you have them, although most resorts and watersports centres provide equipment to hire. Always listen to local advice, avoid touching coral and keep a respectful distance from marine life. Calm mornings often offer the best visibility, so it is worth getting out on the water early.

Discover Scuba Diving

Scuba diving opens up a different side of the Caribbean. Beneath the surface, reefs, drop-offs, wrecks and caves create a fascinating underwater landscape, with warm water making many island destinations comfortable for both new and experienced divers.

First-time divers can usually try an introductory session in a pool or shallow bay before heading further offshore. Certified divers will find centres offering boat dives, equipment hire and local guides who know the best sites. Popular areas include Bonaire, Grand Cayman, Barbados and the British Virgin Islands, but excellent diving can be found throughout the region.

Sailing and Boat Trips

Sailing is a wonderful way to enjoy the Caribbean coastline at a relaxed pace. Spend the afternoon gliding between hidden coves, stopping for a swim from the boat and enjoying lunch on deck as the islands pass by. Catamaran cruises are particularly popular, offering plenty of space and a steady ride.

For a more private experience, charter a skippered yacht or join a small-group island-hopping trip. The Grenadines, the British Virgin Islands and the Bahamas are especially well known for sheltered waters and beautiful anchorages. Sunset cruises are another memorable choice, with the sea turning gold as the evening breeze cools the deck.

Kayaking and Paddleboarding

Kayaking and stand-up paddleboarding are excellent options when you want to explore at your own speed. Paddle along a quiet coastline, investigate small inlets or skim over shallow water where you can see fish below. Many beaches have calm conditions that make these activities suitable for families and first-timers.

Some islands also offer guided mangrove tours, where narrow channels lead into peaceful habitats filled with birds and young marine life. Choose a reputable operator, wear a buoyancy aid and protect yourself from the sun. With warm water, gentle scenery and plenty of choice, Caribbean watersports can be as adventurous or as easy-going as you like.
