Carnival Comes Alive

February is one of the most exciting times to visit Trinidad, when the island’s famous Carnival takes over the streets of Port of Spain. Music, dancing and colourful costumes create an atmosphere that is impossible to ignore, whether you have come specifically for the celebrations or simply find yourself caught up in the fun.

Although the main Carnival parades take place just before Lent, the build-up begins weeks earlier. Steel bands practise late into the evening, calypso tents open their doors and costume bands prepare for the big event. The sound ranges from gentle, melodic passages to powerful rhythms that seem to move through the whole crowd. Look out for pan-yard rehearsals, where local bands welcome audiences with a warm and informal spirit.

Calypso and soca are equally central to the season. Calypso singers comment on current events with wit and sharp observation, while soca provides the irresistible soundtrack to Carnival parties and parades. Even if you do not know the songs, you will soon find yourself clapping, dancing and joining in.

Beyond The Parade

It is easy to spend every day following the Carnival action, but February is also a good month to explore Trinidad and Tobago’s other attractions. In Trinidad, take a trip into the Northern Range, visit the peaceful Caroni Bird Sanctuary or explore the food stalls and markets of Port of Spain.

For a slower change of pace, add Tobago to your holiday. Its beaches are beautiful without feeling overdeveloped, and the island offers excellent opportunities for swimming, snorkelling and boat trips. Pigeon Point and Store Bay are popular choices, while the rainforest and coral reefs provide a different view of the island’s natural character.

Food And Local Life

February is a wonderful time to sample Trinidadian food, particularly around Carnival events. Try doubles, a tasty combination of curried chickpeas and flatbread, or order roti filled with fragrant curry. Street vendors and casual cafés are often the best places to discover the flavours locals enjoy every day.

Plan your accommodation and transport early, as Carnival is an exceptionally popular period. Pack light clothing, comfortable shoes and plenty of sun protection, but bring something smart for evening events.
