December Diving

Caribbean Holidays, December Diving, Scuba divers exploring a colourful coral reef in clear tropical water off Tobago

Why Dive in December?

December is an excellent time to go scuba diving in Trinidad and Tobago, especially around Tobago’s sheltered south-west coast. The rainy season is easing, the sea is often calm, and underwater visibility can be very good. For divers escaping the winter cold, it is a chance to swap grey skies for warm water, bright reefs and a relaxed island atmosphere.

Water temperatures are usually comfortable at around 27 degrees Celsius, so most people are happy in a shorty or lightweight wetsuit. December also brings a lively holiday feel to the islands, but the dive sites are not usually as busy as those in more heavily visited Caribbean destinations. You can enjoy unhurried boat trips and plenty of time in the water.

Top Dive Areas

Tobago is the main base for scuba diving, with operators concentrated around Crown Point, Buccoo and the south-west peninsula. Sites near Store Bay and Mount Irvine are convenient for relaxed shore dives and training, while boat trips reach reefs, walls and wrecks further offshore. Local guides know the currents and conditions well, making it easy to choose suitable dives for your experience.

Speyside, on the island’s quieter north-east coast, is another superb choice. The area is known for dramatic underwater scenery, healthy coral and the chance to see large schools of fish. Divers may encounter rays, turtles, moray eels and colourful reef fish, while experienced visitors can explore deeper sites around the nearby islands.

What You Can See

Trinidad and Tobago’s reefs are full of movement and colour. Look closely among the sponges and coral and you may find seahorses, nudibranchs, frogfish and tiny crabs. Further out, eagle rays glide over the reef, turtles cruise past divers and barracuda patrol the blue water.

December is also a good month for photography, with bright tropical light filtering through clear water. Visibility varies according to weather and location, but many dives offer long views across reefs and rocky outcrops. A guide can point out small creatures that are easy to miss when you are concentrating on your air and buoyancy.

Planning Your Dive Holiday

Choose a recognised dive centre that offers equipment hire, guided dives and clear safety briefings. If you are new to scuba diving, Tobago has calm sites and qualified instructors for introductory experiences and certification courses. Certified divers should bring proof of qualification and logbook details, although operators can normally help if your records are digital.

Allow time between your final dive and your flight, and remember to protect yourself from the strong tropical sun between trips. December is a popular holiday period, so booking accommodation, transfers and dive spaces early is sensible. With warm seas, welcoming local operators and varied underwater sites, Trinidad and Tobago makes a memorable choice for a December diving holiday.
