Where To Explore

Providenciales is a convenient base for exploring a range of habitats. The wetlands around Northwest Point and the protected areas near Chalk Sound can produce sightings of herons, egrets, ospreys and shorebirds. Mangrove channels are also worth exploring, as they provide shelter for smaller birds and an important nursery environment for marine life.

For a classic Turks and Caicos experience, visit the shallow lagoons and salt ponds on Grand Turk or Salt Cay. Birds To See

One of the most memorable January sightings is the Caribbean flamingo. These tall, pink birds often gather in shallow ponds and coastal wetlands, where they feed and rest in small groups. Their colour stands out against the pale salt flats, making them a favourite subject for photographers.

Look out too for brown pelicans, laughing gulls, royal terns and magnificent frigatebirds. In woodland and scrub, you may find pearly-eyed thrashers, bananaquits and Caribbean elaenias. The islands are also important for several protected species, so responsible observation is essential: keep a good distance, avoid nesting areas and never disturb feeding birds.
