January Walking Holidays

Why Visit in January?

January is an excellent month for a walking holiday in the British Virgin Islands. While much of the UK is cold and damp, the islands are enjoying warm, generally dry weather, with comfortable daytime temperatures that make it easier to explore on foot. You can walk in sunshine, pause for a swim and still have plenty of time to enjoy a relaxed evening by the sea.

The dry season also brings clearer views across the islands. From a hillside path on Tortola, you may see neighbouring islands scattered across the deep blue water, while coastal routes reveal quiet coves, rocky headlands and beaches backed by palms. January is popular, but the islands still offer peaceful corners away from the main resorts.

Tortola Trails

Tortola is the natural starting point for a walking holiday, offering a good choice of routes and easy access to beaches, villages and restaurants. Sage Mountain National Park is a highlight, with trails leading through the Caribbean’s first national park. The higher ground is cooler and greener, and the forest feels refreshingly different from the dry coastal landscape.

For a more challenging outing, explore the hills around Road Town or follow paths towards secluded bays. Some routes are steep and uneven, so sturdy walking shoes are essential, particularly after occasional showers. Take water, sun protection and a map, and consider using a local guide if you want to learn more about the islands’ plants, history and wildlife.

Island-Hopping on Foot

One of the pleasures of the British Virgin Islands is the chance to combine walking with short boat journeys. Virgin Gorda is ideal for exploring at a gentle pace, with paths leading through the remarkable granite formations of The Baths. Climb between the boulders, discover hidden pools and finish with a swim at Devil’s Bay.

Jost Van Dyke offers a different experience, with shorter walks, relaxed beach stops and a distinctly laid-back atmosphere. You can also visit Anegada for open coastal scenery and a taste of island life away from the busier routes. Ferries and water taxis make it possible to build a varied itinerary without spending every day on the same island.

Plan Your Walking Break

January is a popular time to visit, so it is wise to book accommodation and boat transfers well in advance. Choose a base with easy access to your preferred trails, then leave space in your plans for beach time and unplanned discoveries. A small hire car or taxi transfers can be useful on Tortola, where roads are hilly and some trailheads are not close to the main resorts.

Walking in the British Virgin Islands is about more than covering miles. It is the pleasure of reaching a quiet viewpoint, cooling off in clear water and chatting with friendly locals over lunch. With warm weather, varied scenery and plenty of opportunities to slow down, a January walking holiday here is an inviting escape from winter.
