BVI Walking Holidays

Caribbean Holidays, BVI Walking Holidays, A scenic coastal walking trail on Tortola in the British Virgin Islands during March, with turquoise sea, green hills and a clear blue sky

Why Walk in March?

March is an excellent time for a walking holiday in the British Virgin Islands. The weather is generally warm, bright and pleasantly dry, making it easier to enjoy the islands on foot without the intense heat that can build later in the year. Expect plenty of sunshine, refreshing trade winds and daytime temperatures that suit both gentle strolls and more energetic hikes.

Walking also gives you a different view of this famous sailing destination. Away from the marinas and beaches, quiet tracks lead through scrubland, woodland and small settlements, with wonderful views across the scattered islands. A good pair of walking shoes, a hat and plenty of water are essential, but the rewards are memorable.

Tortola’s Island Trails

Tortola is the natural base for exploring the British Virgin Islands, and its hilly landscape offers some of the best walking opportunities. Sage Mountain National Park is a highlight, with forest paths winding through the highest point in the US and British Virgin Islands. The air can feel cooler beneath the trees, while glimpses through the foliage reveal the sea far below.

For a shorter outing, explore trails around Road Town and the island’s coastal viewpoints. The routes can be steep in places, so allow time to walk at an easy pace and stop for photographs. Local advice is useful, particularly after rain when sections may be slippery, and guided walks can add fascinating detail about native plants, birds and island history.

Virgin Gorda and The Baths

Virgin Gorda is ideal for combining walking with time beside the sea. The path through The Baths leads between enormous granite boulders and opens on to sheltered coves, rock pools and clear turquoise water. It is a fairly manageable walk, although sturdy footwear helps on uneven ground and steps.

Elsewhere on the island, quieter roads and tracks connect beautiful beaches and viewpoints. Walking early in the day is especially enjoyable, before the strongest sunshine arrives. After your route, you can cool off in the sea or find a relaxed beach café for a freshly prepared lunch.

Planning Your Holiday

A walking holiday in March works well as part of a flexible island itinerary. Spend several days on Tortola, then travel by ferry or boat to Virgin Gorda, Jost Van Dyke or one of the smaller islands for a change of scenery. Distances are not great, but services can be relaxed, so check boat times and leave room for unhurried exploring.

Choose accommodation with easy access to trails, beaches or local transport, and plan walks around the weather and your own fitness. With warm days, welcoming communities and constantly changing sea views, the British Virgin Islands offer an enjoyable way to discover the Caribbean at walking pace.
