December Birdwatching

Caribbean Holidays, December Birdwatching, Scarlet-breasted mountain whistlers and tropical forest scenery in Morne Diablotins National Park, Dominica

Why Visit in December

December is an excellent month for a birdwatching holiday in Dominica. The island is warm, green and lively with birds, while the drier weather usually makes forest walks more comfortable. You can spend the morning following forest calls and the afternoon relaxing beside the sea.

Dominica is often called the Nature Island, and it deserves the name. Much of the interior is covered by rainforest, with steep volcanic hills, clear streams and quiet valleys creating ideal habitats for a remarkable range of birds. December also brings a pleasant holiday atmosphere, without taking away the peaceful feel that makes the island so special.

The Island’s Special Birds

The star of any Dominica birdwatching holiday is the imperial amazon, the island’s national bird. This large, colourful parrot is rare and shy, but experienced local guides know the best areas and can help you recognise its distinctive calls. The red-necked amazon is another sought-after species, often heard before it is seen among the high forest canopy.

Keep looking and listening as you walk, because Dominica’s birdlife is not limited to parrots. You may spot hummingbirds hovering beside flowers, broad-winged hawks circling above the valleys and russet-throated solitaires moving through the undergrowth. A guide can also point out smaller forest birds that are easily missed by visitors travelling alone.

Best Places to Explore

Morne Diablotins National Park is one of the most rewarding places to look for Dominica’s endemic parrots. Trails can be steep and muddy, so sturdy walking shoes and reasonable fitness are useful. The effort is worthwhile, with cool mountain air, deep forest and the constant background sound of birds.

The Syndicate Nature Trail is particularly popular with birdwatchers and offers a manageable introduction to the island’s wildlife. Other productive locations include the Morne Trois Pitons area, the Layou Valley and forest edges around Rosalie. Combining different habitats gives you a better chance of seeing both woodland species and birds that prefer open ground.

Planning Your Holiday

For the best experience, arrange walks with a qualified local birdwatching guide. They understand the terrain, know seasonal sightings and can identify calls that sound similar to an untrained ear. Early starts are important, as birds are generally most active soon after sunrise.

Pack binoculars, light waterproof clothing, insect repellent and a small day bag with water. December sunshine can be strong, but showers are still possible in the rainforest. After a morning outdoors, you can enjoy Dominica’s hot springs, waterfalls, coastal villages and welcoming restaurants, making this a holiday with plenty to do beyond birdwatching.
