Meet Dominica’s Forest Birds
Dominica is a brilliant choice for a birdwatching holiday in the Caribbean. Known as the Nature Island, it has thick rainforest, steep volcanic valleys and quiet mountain trails where birds can be heard long before they are seen. The island’s clean air and relatively undisturbed habitats make every walk feel like a proper escape into the wild.
The star sighting is the rare imperial parrot, Dominica’s national bird, although spotting one takes patience and a little luck. The smaller and more colourful sisserou parrot is also a major highlight, while hummingbirds, tremblers, flycatchers and tanagers bring movement to the forest canopy. Even an early breakfast on a veranda can turn into an enjoyable birdwatching session.
