November Backpacking

Caribbean Holidays, November Backpacking, A backpacker with a small rucksack walking along a quiet tropical beach in Grenada during November, with turquoise water and palm trees

Why Visit Grenada

Grenada is a brilliant choice for a Caribbean backpacking holiday in November. Known as the Spice Island, it combines green mountain scenery, friendly villages, sandy beaches and a relaxed atmosphere that makes travelling independently feel easy. The island is compact enough to explore without rushing, yet varied enough to offer something new each day.

November sits at the end of the wetter season, so you can often enjoy warm sunshine alongside the occasional refreshing shower. Temperatures are pleasantly tropical, generally hovering around 28°C, while the island feels less busy than during the main winter holiday period. That means more space on the beach, easier conversations with locals and a better chance of finding simple accommodation at a sensible price.

Start in St George’s

Begin your Grenada adventure in St George’s, one of the Caribbean’s most attractive capitals. Red-tiled roofs climb around the horseshoe-shaped harbour, and the narrow streets lead to lively markets, small cafés and historic forts. Spend a morning wandering through the market for nutmeg, cinnamon and fresh fruit before stopping for a cold drink beside the water.

St George’s is also a useful base for meeting other travellers and arranging island excursions. Local buses are inexpensive and connect the capital with nearby communities, while shared taxis and boat trips can take you further afield. Pack comfortable shoes, as the hills and cobbled streets are part of the city’s character.

Rainforest Adventures

November is a particularly good time to explore Grenada’s interior, when the rainforest is lush and waterfalls are full. Hike to Annandale Falls for an accessible woodland walk and a swim beneath the cascade, or head towards Grand Etang National Park for cooler air, forest trails and views across the volcanic landscape.

Independent travellers can join a guided walk or ask local guesthouses about routes and transport. A guide is worthwhile for longer hikes, especially after rain, when paths may be slippery. Carry water, insect repellent and a light waterproof jacket, then take time to listen for birds among the trees.

Beaches and Water

Grand Anse is the island’s best-known beach, with two miles of soft sand and calm water that is ideal for swimming. It is easy to spend a whole day here, moving between a morning snorkel, a casual lunch and a sunset walk. For a quieter experience, try Morne Rouge, often called BBC Beach, or discover a smaller cove along the southern coast.

November’s warm sea makes it tempting to stay in the water. Snorkelling trips, paddleboarding and diving can be arranged locally, and Grenada’s underwater sculpture park offers a memorable introduction to the island’s marine life. Check sea conditions before heading out, particularly if a tropical shower has passed through.

Practical Backpacking Tips

Choose a guesthouse, hostel-style room or simple apartment and use it as a base for a few nights at a time. Booking ahead is sensible around popular dates, but November usually offers more flexibility than the Christmas and New Year period. Keep some Eastern Caribbean dollars for buses, markets and small restaurants, although cards are accepted in many established businesses.

Pack light clothing, sturdy walking shoes, swimwear and a compact rain jacket. Most importantly, slow down and leave room for spontaneous plans: a village festival, a recommendation from a bus passenger or an unplanned swim can become the highlight of your Grenada backpacking holiday.
