Grenada Backpacking

Caribbean Holidays, Grenada Backpacking, Backpacker walking through a colourful Grenadian market in St George's, with harbour views and tropical hills

Start in St George’s

Grenada is a brilliant choice for a Caribbean backpacking holiday if you want more than a beach resort. Known as the Spice Island, it combines friendly towns, green mountain scenery, quiet coves and an easy-going local culture. You can enjoy the island at your own pace, whether you have a week to explore or several weeks for a deeper adventure.

Begin in St George’s, one of the Caribbean’s most attractive capitals. Walk around the horseshoe-shaped harbour, browse the market for fresh fruit and spices, and climb the steep streets to find views across the red rooftops and sea. Guesthouses and small hotels make a useful base, while local cafés are ideal for trying oil down, Grenada’s traditional one-pot dish.

Explore the Rainforest

Beyond the capital, Grenada becomes wonderfully green and peaceful. Head inland to Grand Etang National Park, where forest trails wind through giant trees and the air feels cooler than on the coast. Look out for Mona monkeys, colourful birds and glimpses of the island’s volcanic landscape as you walk.

Waterfalls are another highlight of a Grenada backpacking trip. Concord Falls and Annandale Falls are accessible without demanding a serious trek, and a swim in the natural pools is a welcome reward after travelling in the heat. Take sensible footwear, carry water and use a local guide for longer routes or less familiar trails.

Find Quiet Beaches

Grenada has famous beaches, but you do not have to stay beside the busiest stretch of sand. Grand Anse is convenient for swimming, affordable food and spectacular sunsets, while Morne Rouge offers a calmer atmosphere nearby. Public minibuses make it relatively simple to travel between the capital and popular coastal areas.

For a quieter day, explore the south coast or take a boat towards the smaller islands and secluded bays. The water is warm and clear, so pack a mask for snorkelling. Local operators can arrange trips to reefs, beaches and nearby Carriacou, often providing a more personal experience than a large organised excursion.

Travel Like a Local

Grenada is easy to enjoy on a modest budget, particularly if you choose guesthouses, simple rooms and locally owned restaurants. Eat where residents eat, use the minibuses and ask hosts for advice on beaches, walks and village events. The island’s pace is relaxed, but journeys can take longer than expected on winding roads, so leave room in your plans.

Pack light clothing, strong sandals or walking shoes, sun protection and a lightweight rain jacket. The dry season, generally from January to May, is popular for outdoor activities, although showers can happen at any time. Most importantly, allow yourself time to stop and chat, sample fresh nutmeg and enjoy the view. That unhurried spirit is a big part of what makes backpacking in Grenada so memorable.
