Grenada Backpacking

Caribbean Holidays, Grenada Backpacking, Backpacker walking through a colourful Grenadian market in December, tropical island atmosphere

Why Visit Grenada in December?

December is an excellent time for a Grenada backpacking holiday. The island is warm, welcoming and easy to explore, with daytime temperatures usually around 28°C and plenty of sunshine. After the wetter months, the landscape is still lush, while the drier weather makes it more comfortable to hike, swim and travel between villages.

Christmas brings a lively atmosphere without making Grenada feel overwhelming. You can enjoy the energy of local markets and waterfront restaurants, then escape to a quiet beach or hillside guesthouse. For backpackers, this balance makes the island especially appealing: there is plenty to do, but you can still find authentic moments away from the main resort areas.

Where to Stay on a Budget

Grand Anse is a practical base for backpacking in Grenada. Its long sweep of soft sand is close to shops, buses, cafés and simple places to eat, while the regular local buses make it straightforward to reach St George’s and other parts of the island. Look for guesthouses, small hotels and self-catering rooms, particularly if you want to keep daily costs under control.

St George’s offers a more urban experience, with colourful buildings climbing the hills around the harbour. Staying nearby puts you close to the market, historic forts and local food stalls. For a quieter stay, consider the fishing village of Gouyave or accommodation near the east coast, where you will be closer to rural walks and less-visited beaches.

Things to Do in Grenada

Grenada is known as the Spice Island, and a visit to a nutmeg or cocoa estate gives you a real feel for its history and countryside. You can also hike through Grand Etang National Park, where forest trails lead around the crater lake and through cool, green uplands. Keep an eye out for Mona monkeys and tropical birds along the way.

Underwater, the island is just as rewarding. The Molinere Underwater Sculpture Park can be visited by snorkellers or divers, while reefs around Carriacou offer clear water and colourful marine life. Back on land, spend an afternoon at Annandale Falls, explore Fort Frederick or join locals for fresh grilled fish in Gouyave.

Getting Around and Eating Locally

Local buses are inexpensive and useful for travelling between the main towns, although routes can be less frequent in rural areas. Taxis and organised day trips are helpful when visiting distant attractions, especially if you want to combine several stops. Driving is another option, but Grenada’s steep, winding roads require confidence and care.

Food is one of the highlights of a December trip. Try oil down, Grenada’s hearty national dish, as well as roti, fried bake, fresh seafood and seasonal fruit. Markets are ideal for inexpensive snacks, while small family-run restaurants often provide the most memorable meals and a chance to chat with local people.

Planning Your December Trip

December is a popular month for Caribbean travel, so book flights and accommodation early, particularly around Christmas and New Year. Pack light clothing, comfortable walking shoes, swimwear, sun protection and a light waterproof layer for short tropical showers. It is also sensible to carry small amounts of cash for buses, markets and beachside vendors.

With friendly communities, varied scenery and plenty of affordable experiences, Grenada is a rewarding destination for independent travellers. A well-planned backpacking holiday here can combine forest adventures, relaxed beach days and genuine island culture, all within a manageable and memorable Caribbean escape.
