Martinique Walking

Caribbean Holidays, Martinique Walking, A scenic coastal walking trail in Martinique in May, with tropical vegetation, volcanic hills and bright blue Caribbean sea

Why Walk Martinique in May?

May is an excellent month for a Martinique walking holiday. The island is warm, green and full of life, while the busiest winter season has begun to ease. You can expect daytime temperatures around the high twenties Celsius, making it comfortable for active days when you set off early and take regular breaks.

There may be occasional tropical showers, particularly as the wetter season approaches, but they are often brief and refreshing. The rain keeps the forests lush and brings out the rich colours of the island, from emerald hillsides to vividly painted flowers. Good walking shoes, light clothing and a compact waterproof jacket are all sensible additions to your luggage.

Volcanic Mountain Trails

For a real sense of Martinique’s landscape, head towards the northern highlands and the slopes of Mount Pelée. The trails here pass through dense vegetation and changing scenery, with cooler air at altitude and impressive views when the clouds lift. Routes vary from manageable woodland walks to more demanding hikes for experienced walkers.

The climb to the summit requires good fitness, steady weather and careful planning, but you do not need to tackle the highest paths to enjoy the area. Well-chosen routes around Morne Rouge and the surrounding countryside reveal old volcanic terrain, quiet villages and dramatic ridges. A local guide can add useful detail about the mountain, its geology and the history of the 1902 eruption.

Coastal Walks and Beaches

Martinique’s coastline offers some of the island’s most enjoyable walking. In the north, paths near Anse Couleuvre combine rainforest with rugged volcanic shorelines and dark sand beaches. The route can feel wonderfully remote, although uneven ground and heat mean that sturdy footwear and plenty of water are essential.

Further south, gentler coastal paths lead past coves, fishing villages and viewpoints over clear Caribbean water. Around the Presqu’île de la Caravelle, you can explore a nature reserve where dry woodland, mangroves and rocky headlands create a varied day out. Allow time to stop for photographs, a swim or a simple Creole lunch.

A Comfortable Walking Holiday

A walking holiday in Martinique does not have to mean long days on the trail. Mix active excursions with relaxed afternoons beside the sea, and choose accommodation that gives you an easy base for exploring. Fort-de-France is useful for culture and transport, while villages on the west and south coasts offer a quieter atmosphere.

After walking, look forward to fresh fish, accras, plantain and fragrant Creole sauces, perhaps with a chilled local drink. May is a rewarding time to experience Martinique at a relaxed pace: warm enough for the beach, lively enough for outdoor adventures and green enough to make every trail memorable.
