Puerto Rico Birdwatching

Why Visit in May

May is an excellent month for a birdwatching holiday in Puerto Rico. The island is warm, green and full of life, while the busiest winter season has begun to ease. You can expect plenty of sunshine, with occasional showers that freshen the forests and bring birds into view.

This is also a rewarding time to explore at your own pace. Early mornings are pleasantly cool, trails are quieter and local guides have time to share their knowledge. Whether you are an experienced birder or simply enjoy beautiful wildlife, Puerto Rico makes it easy to combine nature with beaches, history and excellent food.

Rainforest Birdwatching

El Yunque National Forest is one of the island’s best-known birdwatching locations. Its dense rainforest, mountain streams and scenic viewpoints provide habitat for species such as the Puerto Rican tody, Puerto Rican bullfinch and Puerto Rican woodpewee. Listen carefully and you may hear birds before you see them among the leaves.

A guided walk can make a real difference, especially in thick woodland. Local experts know where to look and can help identify calls, nesting behaviour and small movements in the canopy. Take sturdy footwear, insect repellent and a light waterproof jacket, as showers can arrive quickly in the hills.

Rare Island Birds

Puerto Rico is home to several special species found nowhere else. The critically endangered Puerto Rican parrot remains one of the island’s most important conservation stories, and sightings in the wild are rare, but visiting protected areas supports the work being done to safeguard it.

Other endemic birds are more readily spotted, including the Puerto Rican lizard cuckoo and the striking green mango hummingbird. Patience is essential. Pause often, keep voices low and give birds plenty of space, particularly around feeding areas and nesting sites.

Coasts and Wetlands

Puerto Rico’s birdwatching opportunities extend well beyond the rainforest. Coastal lagoons, mangroves and salt flats attract herons, egrets, terns and shorebirds, while dry forest areas offer a completely different landscape and range of species.

Visit Cabo Rojo in the island’s south-west for open scenery, coastal views and excellent chances of seeing waterbirds. The nearby salt flats are particularly atmospheric in the early morning, when the light is gentle and bird activity is high. After your walk, you can enjoy a relaxed afternoon by the sea.

Planning Your Trip

Base yourself in San Juan for easy access to historic streets, restaurants and several nature reserves, or choose accommodation closer to the forests and wetlands for earlier starts. A hire car is useful if you want to visit several birding sites, although guided excursions are a convenient option.

Pack lightweight clothing, sun protection, binoculars and a notebook for recording sightings. Most importantly, allow time to slow down and enjoy the experience. In May, Puerto Rico offers warm island hospitality, varied habitats and the chance to discover remarkable birds in memorable surroundings.
