Puerto Rico Birdwatching

Why Visit in December

December is an excellent time for a Puerto Rico birdwatching holiday. The island is warm, green and full of life, while the drier weather usually makes trails more comfortable for exploring. It is also a rewarding month for seeing resident Caribbean species alongside winter visitors that have arrived from North America.

Early mornings are the best time to head out, when the forest is cool and birds are most active. You might hear a Puerto Rican tody before spotting its bright green back and red bill, or catch the unmistakable call of the endemic Puerto Rican woodpecker. Between sightings, there is always something interesting to notice, from tree frogs and colourful butterflies to sweeping mountain views.

Top Birdwatching Locations

El Yunque National Forest is the island’s best-known natural area and a superb place to begin. Its forest trails pass through dense vegetation, waterfalls and open viewpoints, creating plenty of opportunities to look for the Puerto Rican parrot, bananaquit and several hummingbird species. Local guides can help you find birds that are easy to miss among the leaves.

For a change of scenery, travel to the dry forests and salt flats around Cabo Rojo in the south-west. The coastal landscape attracts herons, egrets, shorebirds and raptors, particularly around the lagoons and mangroves. The nearby lighthouse also makes a memorable stop once the morning’s birdwatching is over.

Humacao Nature Reserve and the wetlands near San Juan are useful additions to a December itinerary. These areas are accessible and varied, with ponds, woodland and coastal habitats supporting different species within a relatively small distance. Even a quiet walk beside a lagoon can produce a surprisingly good list.

What You May See

Puerto Rico is particularly special because several birds found here cannot be seen anywhere else. The tiny Puerto Rican tody is a favourite, while the Puerto Rican lizard cuckoo, Puerto Rican bullfinch and Puerto Rican oriole are also exciting finds. The Puerto Rican parrot remains rare, but specialist trips may offer a chance to look for it in protected forest.

December can also bring migrant birds to the island’s wetlands and open country. Keep watch for ducks, sandpipers and other waders, as well as brown pelicans and magnificent frigatebirds along the coast. A notebook or birding app is handy for recording sightings and comparing the different habitats you visit.

Planning Your Holiday

Pack lightweight clothing, comfortable walking shoes, sun protection and a light waterproof layer for forest showers. Binoculars are essential, and a small field guide makes identifying unfamiliar species much easier. Start early, carry water and allow time to enjoy the island rather than rushing between locations.

December is a popular time to visit Puerto Rico, especially around Christmas and New Year, so booking accommodation and guided excursions in advance is sensible. Combine birdwatching with historic San Juan, local food and a few relaxed beach days, and you have a holiday that feels both active and easy-going. With varied landscapes, expert guides and remarkable endemic birds, Puerto Rico is a destination that keeps rewarding curious travellers.
