Why Dive Bermuda in May?

May is an excellent time for a Bermuda scuba diving holiday. The island is warming up nicely, the sea is becoming comfortable for longer dives, and the busy summer season has not yet reached its peak. That means you can enjoy a relaxed atmosphere both above and below the water.

Water temperatures are typically around 22°C, although a thin wetsuit is still a sensible choice for most divers. Visibility can be impressive, often stretching well beyond 20 metres, so May is a rewarding month for seeing Bermuda’s famous wrecks, coral reefs and rich marine life in clear detail.

Explore Bermuda’s Wrecks

Bermuda is widely known as the wreck capital of the Atlantic, and May is a great month to discover why. More than 300 wrecks lie around the island, offering dives for a range of experience levels. Some are close enough to the surface for newer divers, while others provide deeper, more challenging exploration.

On a typical dive, you might swim past a rusting bow, peer through open sections of a ship and watch schools of fish weaving around the remains. Local dive guides know the sites well and can explain the history behind each wreck, adding an extra dimension to the underwater experience.

Reefs and Marine Life

Bermuda’s reefs are just as appealing as its wrecks. Coral gardens, rocky ledges and sheltered channels support parrotfish, angelfish, wrasse and large shoals of smaller tropical fish. Turtles and rays may also appear, while careful observers can spot eels and fascinating tiny creatures hiding among the reef.

The bright water and generally calm conditions make May particularly enjoyable for underwater photography. Whether you are an experienced diver or taking your first guided reef dive, there is plenty to see at a comfortable pace.

Planning Your Dive Holiday

Bermuda has well-established dive centres offering equipment hire, training, guided excursions and boat trips. It is worth booking popular wreck dives in advance, particularly if you have specific sites in mind. Check whether your preferred operator requires proof of certification or recent diving experience for deeper locations.

Between dives, leave time to enjoy Bermuda on land. Explore pastel-coloured buildings, visit historic forts, or relax on one of the island’s pink-sand beaches. With pleasant May weather, excellent visibility and a remarkable variety of underwater sites, Bermuda offers a scuba diving holiday that combines adventure with easy-going island life.
