Bermuda Walking Holidays

Walk Bermuda in May

May is an excellent month for a Bermuda walking holiday. The days are warm without the intense heat of midsummer, the countryside is fresh and green, and the sea is already inviting for a refreshing swim after a walk. With pleasant conditions and fewer visitors than during the busiest summer weeks, it is a comfortable time to explore the island at your own pace.

Bermuda is compact, but its landscapes are remarkably varied. Coastal paths lead past hidden coves and rocky viewpoints, while inland routes pass through woodland, historic lanes and quiet settlements. A walking holiday here is less about covering huge distances and more about enjoying the scenery, stopping for photographs and discovering the island’s character one stretch at a time.

Railway Trail Rambles

The Bermuda Railway Trail is one of the best places to begin. This former railway route crosses much of the island and offers a mixture of woodland, open views and glimpses of the coastline. The trail is generally manageable for regular walkers, although some sections can be uneven, so comfortable shoes with good grip are useful.

May brings pleasant walking temperatures, but it is still wise to carry water, wear a hat and apply sun cream. Take your time around the old bridges, cuttings and shaded paths, where you may spot colourful birds and tropical plants. Because the trail connects with roads and local lanes, it is easy to plan shorter walks rather than committing to the whole route.

South Shore Views

For classic Bermuda scenery, head to the South Shore. Walking between Horseshoe Bay, Warwick Long Bay and the smaller beaches nearby brings a succession of dramatic viewpoints, clear water and soft pink-tinged sand. The coastal path rises and falls gently, giving you plenty of opportunities to pause and enjoy the view.

Early morning is particularly rewarding, when the light is soft and the beaches are peaceful. In May, the water is often warm enough for a dip, so pack swimwear and a small towel if your route includes a beach stop. Some paths run close to cliff edges, so follow signs and take extra care after rain or in windy conditions.

Historic Town Walks

Walking in Bermuda is not only about nature. The UNESCO-listed town of St George’s is ideal for a relaxed stroll through narrow streets lined with pastel buildings, old churches and historic squares. Its lanes lead to waterfront views, small shops and cafés where you can stop for a cool drink or a light lunch.

Hamilton also makes a good base for shorter urban walks, with parks, galleries and harbour views close together. Combine a town visit with a country lane or railway trail for a varied day. Bermuda’s excellent bus and ferry services make it straightforward to return to your accommodation without needing to retrace your steps.

Plan Your May Escape

Choose accommodation near the routes you most want to explore, or stay centrally and use public transport to reach different parts of the island. Lightweight clothing, walking shoes, sun protection and a waterproof layer are sensible additions to your luggage, as May showers can arrive quickly.

Allow time for more than walking: enjoy a local fish dish, visit a historic fort or simply sit beside the sea at the end of the day. With its manageable distances, welcoming atmosphere and varied scenery, Bermuda offers a rewarding walking holiday for both keen walkers and travellers who prefer gentle, flexible outings.
