Havana’s Colourful Streets

March is an excellent time to explore Havana with your camera or phone. The weather is usually warm, bright and comfortable for walking, while the city’s faded colonial buildings, vintage cars and lively street scenes provide an endless supply of memorable photographs.

Start in Old Havana, where cobbled lanes open into handsome squares framed by colourful façades. Capture the details as well as the wider views: painted wooden doors, balconies hung with laundry and locals chatting outside cafés. Early morning brings softer light and quieter streets, making it easier to enjoy the atmosphere before the day becomes busier.

For one of the most recognisable Cuba Instagram hotspots, head to the Malecón at sunset. The broad seawall is a favourite meeting place, with Havana’s skyline behind you and the Caribbean stretching towards the horizon. Bring a light jacket for the evening breeze and stay as the sky changes from blue to gold.

Vintage Cars and Classic Views

Havana’s classic cars are more than a photo opportunity, but they are certainly one of the city’s most photogenic features. You will find brightly polished Chevrolets, Fords and Buicks around central squares and along the main avenues, often in shades of turquoise, coral, yellow and red.

Ask your driver to stop at a quiet, attractive street rather than taking every photograph from the back seat. This gives you time to frame the car against the architecture and capture small details such as the chrome grille, worn leather seats or a driver’s colourful shirt. Always agree the fare and route before setting off, particularly if you are arranging a longer tour.

Vedado offers a different look from Old Havana, with grand villas, leafy streets and striking 1950s architecture. It is a good area for relaxed photographs, especially around the wide avenues near Plaza de la Revolución. Visit earlier in the day for clear light and fewer crowds.

Music, Murals and Local Life

Cuba’s best Instagram moments are not always famous landmarks. Look for live music in Havana’s squares, dancers moving to a street rhythm and small art displays tucked into neighbourhood corners. These everyday scenes show the character of the city far better than a carefully staged picture.

Be respectful when photographing people. A friendly smile and a quick request can make the interaction more enjoyable for everyone, and some performers may expect a small tip. Consider putting your phone away occasionally too; wandering without constantly searching for the next image lets you notice the sounds, conversations and aromas that make Havana distinctive.

Beyond Havana: Viñales Valley

If you have time for a day trip, Viñales Valley is one of the finest Cuba Instagram locations outside the capital. Its dramatic limestone mogotes rise above tobacco fields, red-earth tracks and simple farm buildings. March’s generally dry conditions are well suited to viewpoints and countryside walks.

Visit a tobacco farm to photograph the landscape and learn how local farmers work the land. A guide can take you to viewpoints that are difficult to find independently, while the changing light late in the afternoon gives the valley more depth. Whether you are using a professional camera or a mobile phone, leave space in your itinerary for stopping when a view catches your eye.
