January offers a good mix of smaller reef life and larger encounters. Look closely among the coral for angelfish, parrotfish, butterflyfish and tiny brightly coloured creatures hiding in crevices. Rays may glide over sandy patches, and turtles are possible at several sites if you are patient and keep a respectful distance.

One of the season’s special highlights is the chance to see humpback whales around the waters near Samaná Bay.
