Scuba Diving May

Diving Conditions in May

May is a rewarding time for scuba diving in the Dominican Republic. The sea is generally warm, visibility is often very good and the quieter feel of the shoulder season can mean a more relaxed experience at dive centres and on boats. Water temperatures commonly sit around 27°C, so most divers are comfortable in a light wetsuit or rash vest.

There can be short tropical showers during May, but they rarely spoil a full day on the water. Mornings are often calm and bright, making them especially pleasant for boat trips. Conditions vary between coasts and individual sites, so your local dive operator will choose the best locations for the day.

Where to Dive

Bayahibe is one of the Dominican Republic’s best-known diving bases and a sensible choice for a May holiday. Its sheltered waters offer colourful reefs, pinnacles and wreck sites, while nearby Isla Saona provides memorable day trips with clear water and abundant marine life. Divers of different abilities can usually find suitable sites close to shore.

Punta Cana is another popular option, with reef dives, underwater caves and intriguing wrecks within easy reach of the resort area. The north coast around Sosúa and Puerto Plata is known for lively reefs, swim-throughs and striking underwater scenery. If you are staying in Santo Domingo, nearby sites can also provide an enjoyable introduction to Caribbean diving.

Marine Life Encounters

Warm Caribbean water brings plenty of life to the reefs in May. Look out for angelfish, parrotfish, trumpetfish and busy schools of smaller reef fish moving between corals. Turtles may appear around seagrass beds and reefs, while rays and moray eels are occasional highlights for observant divers.

The Dominican Republic also has fascinating wrecks and cavern environments, where changing light creates a completely different atmosphere from an open reef. Experienced divers may enjoy deeper sites and stronger currents, but beginners can still expect plenty to see on shallower guided dives. A good dive guide will help you spot small creatures that are easy to miss.

Planning Your Dive Holiday

Choose a reputable, properly certified dive centre with well-maintained equipment and small groups where possible. Bring proof of certification, logbook details and any medical information your operator may need. If you have not dived recently, a refresher session in shallow water is a sensible way to rebuild confidence.

Allow time between your final dive and flying home, and remember to protect yourself from the strong Caribbean sun when you are on the boat. May combines warm water, excellent holiday weather and a broad choice of dive sites, making it a particularly appealing month for a Dominican Republic scuba diving holiday.
