Why Visit in March

March is an excellent time for a nature holiday in Saint Barthélemy. The island is usually warm, bright and pleasantly breezy, with daytime temperatures that make it easy to explore without feeling overwhelmed by heat. Rain is generally limited, so you can plan walks, boat trips and beach time with confidence.

This is also a comfortable month for enjoying the island at your own pace. Start with a swim before breakfast, spend the middle of the day exploring a coastal trail, then settle beside the sea as the sun goes down. Saint Barthélemy, often called St Barts, is compact enough for varied scenery to be within a short drive.

Coastal Walks

Saint Barthélemy’s walking routes reveal a side of the island that is easy to miss from the beach. Trails lead over low hills, around rocky headlands and towards secluded coves, with broad views across the Caribbean. The route to Colombier is a favourite, ending at a beautiful bay reached on foot or by boat.

Wear sturdy shoes, carry water and set out earlier in the day, when the light is softer and the temperature is cooler. Along the way, look for prickly pear, sea grapes and hardy shrubs shaped by the wind. March’s clear conditions often make the views particularly rewarding, especially from the higher paths above the coast.

Sea Life and Snorkelling

The warm, clear water around Saint Barthélemy is ideal for seeing marine life. Calm bays such as Anse du Gouverneur, Anse des Salines and Colombier can offer good conditions for a relaxed snorkel, with fish moving over rocks and sandy seabeds. Even a short swim from shore may reveal plenty to watch.

For a fuller day on the water, book a local boat trip to quieter snorkelling spots. You might see bright reef fish, rays or sea turtles, although wildlife sightings can never be guaranteed. Choose an operator that respects marine habitats, avoid touching coral and use reef-friendly sun protection where possible.

Beaches and Wildlife

Nature in Saint Barthélemy is not limited to organised excursions. A quiet beach walk can bring sightings of seabirds, lizards and crabs among the rocks, while the island’s offshore waters attract seabirds and passing marine life. Keep a little distance from animals and leave shells, plants and stones where you find them.

March is a lovely time to enjoy the beaches before or after the busiest part of the day. Visit Salines for a spacious, natural setting, or choose a sheltered bay for swimming and a picnic.
