Why Walk in December

December is an excellent time to discover Saint Barthélemy on foot. The island is warm, bright and generally pleasantly dry, while a gentle breeze often makes walking more comfortable than you might expect in the Caribbean. It is a lovely way to enjoy the scenery at your own pace, away from the rush of the main beaches.

Days are ideal for exploring early or late, with clear light over the bays and hills. You can stop for a swim, take photographs from a viewpoint or settle into a beach café whenever you fancy a break. With Christmas approaching, the island also has a lively but polished atmosphere, particularly around Gustavia and St Jean.

Coastal Paths and Views

Saint Barthélemy may be compact, but its walking routes offer plenty of variety. Paths around Colombier lead towards one of the island’s most rewarding viewpoints, with broad views across the sea and access to a beautiful, secluded beach. The route is uneven in places, so sturdy trainers or walking shoes are useful.

For a shorter outing, explore the coastal areas near Anse des Cayes or Lorient. Rocky headlands, low scrub and crashing waves create a refreshing contrast with the calm, sandy bays. Keep an eye on the changing light, as even familiar views can look completely different in the early morning or just before sunset.

Beaches Along the Way

One of the pleasures of a walking holiday here is how easily a hike can become a beach day. Saline Beach is a peaceful choice, with a long stretch of sand and a natural setting that feels wonderfully open. The walk across the low, dry landscape is straightforward, although there is little shade, so take water and sun protection.

At Gouverneur, the reward is a dramatic sweep of sand backed by green hills and rocky slopes. It is a superb place for a picnic and a swim, provided the sea conditions are suitable. December sunshine can be strong, so plan active walks for the cooler parts of the day and allow time to relax afterwards.

Easy Island Exploration

Walking is also a great way to experience the character of Gustavia. Follow the harbour, browse independent shops and climb towards Fort Gustav for views over the red roofs and anchored yachts. The town is compact, and a relaxed stroll can easily be combined with lunch or a coffee.

Outside the capital, roads can be narrow and some routes include steep slopes, so take care and stay alert around traffic. Carry a refillable bottle, wear a hat and check the weather before setting out. A little preparation leaves you free to enjoy Saint Barthélemy’s scenery, warm December atmosphere and wonderfully unhurried island pace.
