January Beaches

January Beach Weather

January is an excellent time for a Saint Martin and Sint Maarten beach holiday. The islands enjoy warm, generally settled weather, with daytime temperatures often around 28°C and pleasantly cooler evenings. Sea temperatures remain inviting, so you can move easily between swimming, snorkelling and simply relaxing beside the water.

This is also one of the drier parts of the year. A brief shower can still appear, but it usually passes quickly and leaves the afternoon bright and fresh. With plenty of sunshine and a comfortable breeze, January is ideal for escaping the colder, darker weather in the United Kingdom.

Best Beaches to Visit

Orient Bay is a popular choice for a classic beach day, offering a broad sweep of sand, shallow water and a lively selection of beach restaurants. It is easy to spend a whole day here, perhaps starting with a swim before settling into a lounger for a long, unhurried lunch.

For a quieter atmosphere, try Anse Marcel or Grand Case Beach. These sheltered bays are well suited to calm swims and relaxed walks, while Maho Beach on the Dutch side is famous for its close-up views of aircraft arriving at the nearby airport. Mullet Bay is another favourite, with soft sand, clear water and a more laid-back feel.

Food and Island Flavours

January is a wonderful month for enjoying the islands’ food scene. Grand Case is known for its excellent restaurants and informal beachside eateries, where menus often feature grilled fish, prawns, lobster and Creole dishes. You can enjoy a smart dinner here, or choose something simple from a small local food stall.

Sint Maarten brings a different mix of Dutch, Caribbean and international influences. Try local specialities such as conch, johnnycakes and barbecue, and leave time for a rum punch or a cool Guavaberry drink. Meals are usually relaxed, making it easy to combine dinner with a walk along the waterfront.

Things to Do Beyond the Sand

Although the beaches are the main attraction, there is plenty more to see. Take a boat trip to nearby islands, go sailing along the coast or book a snorkelling excursion to look for colourful fish in clear, warm water. The calm January conditions are particularly well suited to getting out on the sea.

On land, explore the French side’s villages and galleries, or spend an afternoon in Philipsburg browsing shops along Front Street. Fort Louis offers wide views over Marigot and the surrounding coastline. Hiring a car is useful if you want to visit several beaches at your own pace, although taxis and organised tours make travelling around straightforward.

Planning Your January Escape

January is a popular month, particularly around New Year, so it is sensible to arrange flights and accommodation early. Pack light clothing, swimwear, sun cream and a light layer for breezy evenings. Comfortable shoes are useful for coastal paths, forts and exploring town.

Whether you choose a quiet bay, a lively beach bar or a day split between both sides of the island, Saint Martin and Sint Maarten offer an easy-going Caribbean escape. Warm weather, excellent beaches and a welcoming mix of cultures make January a particularly appealing time to visit.
