February is one of the most exciting times to go backpacking in Trinidad and Tobago. The weather is generally warm, bright and comfortable, with lower humidity than later in the year, making it easier to explore on foot, by bus or with a small backpack. You can expect plenty of sunshine, although a short tropical shower is always possible.

The biggest attraction is Trinidad Carnival, one of the Caribbean’s most energetic celebrations. Experience Trinidad Carnival

Carnival events take place for weeks, building towards the main celebrations before Ash Wednesday. Backpackers can enjoy smaller fêtes, live music and community events as well as the famous street parades. Ask locally about tickets and timings, and book popular accommodation well ahead because rooms can become scarce.

Port of Spain is a useful base for exploring the festivities. Spend the morning visiting the Queen’s Park Savannah, browse the markets and food stalls, then head out in the evening when the city becomes especially lively. Keep valuables secure, travel with others at night and use reputable taxis or organised transport after events.

After the bustle of Trinidad, Tobago offers an easy change of pace. Fly or take the ferry across, then settle into the relaxed coastal rhythm around Scarborough, Crown Point or Charlotteville. The island has beautiful beaches, clear water and a friendly atmosphere that suits independent travellers.

Take a local bus or shared taxi to explore, or hire a car for more remote beaches and viewpoints. Store Bay and Pigeon Point are convenient for swimming and watersports, while Englishman’s Bay feels more secluded. Snorkelling, kayaking and boat trips are all popular in February, when the sea is often calm.

Tobago’s Main Ridge Forest Reserve is ideal for a day outdoors. Well-established trails lead through dense rainforest where you may spot colourful birds, butterflies and unusual plants. A local guide can add detail to the walk and help you find places that are easy to miss on your own.

Food is another highlight of travelling here. Try doubles, roti, bake and shark, fresh fish and hearty callaloo from local cafés and roadside stalls. Choose busy places with good turnover, carry bottled water, and leave room for a cold coconut water or a sweet treat from a bakery.

February is a popular period, so arrange your first few nights, Carnival transport and any island connections before arriving. Guesthouses, hostels and small hotels are available, but the best-value options can disappear quickly. Pack light clothing, comfortable walking shoes, swimwear, sun protection and a waterproof layer.

English is widely spoken, and travelling independently is straightforward with sensible planning. Be respectful when photographing people and Carnival costumes, follow local advice, and allow extra time for traffic during major events.
