Trinidad Backpacking

Why Visit in May?

May is a rewarding time for a Trinidad and Tobago backpacking holiday. The islands are moving towards the wetter part of the year, but showers are often brief and refreshing, leaving plenty of sunshine for exploring. You can enjoy a more relaxed atmosphere than during the busiest winter months, with fewer people at popular beaches and attractions.

Travel in May can also offer good value, particularly for accommodation and flights. Pack a light waterproof jacket, quick-drying clothes and comfortable walking shoes, then make the most of the warm temperatures. Trinidad is lively, varied and full of local character, while Tobago is ideal for slowing down beside the sea.

Start in Port of Spain

Port of Spain is a great introduction to Trinidad for independent travellers. Spend a morning wandering through the Queen’s Park Savannah, where locals jog, meet friends and enjoy snacks from nearby food vendors. The city’s markets, music venues and restaurants make it easy to experience everyday Trinidad beyond the usual tourist trail.

Do not miss the Royal Botanic Gardens and the National Museum, which provide a useful sense of the island’s history and natural environment. For an evening out, ask locals about live calypso, soca or steelpan performances. Trinidad’s food is another highlight, with doubles, roti, bake and shark, and peppery Creole dishes offering plenty of affordable choices.

Rainforest Adventures

Trinidad is one of the Caribbean’s best islands for nature lovers. Take a guided walk in the Northern Range to look for hummingbirds, colourful butterflies and tropical plants. The Asa Wright Nature Centre is especially well known for birdwatching, and May’s occasional rain keeps the forest richly green.

Waterfalls and swimming holes provide welcome breaks after a warm hike. Always use a reputable guide for less familiar trails, follow local advice about weather and carry water, insect repellent and a small dry bag. The reward is a more adventurous side of the island, often with peaceful views and very few other visitors.

Island Time in Tobago

From Trinidad, continue to Tobago for beaches, coral reefs and an easier pace. Base yourself around Crown Point for convenient transport and lively evenings, or choose Speyside if you prefer excellent diving and a quieter setting. Pigeon Point is famous for its calm, shallow water, while nearby beaches offer beautiful places to swim and read.

May is a good month for snorkelling, boat trips and exploring the coastline. Look out for reef fish and, on suitable excursions, visit the waters around Buccoo Reef. Tobago is straightforward to enjoy independently, but booking boat trips and popular guesthouses ahead is sensible if your travel dates are fixed.

Practical Backpacking Tips

Use local minibuses and shared taxis where practical, but allow extra time because journeys can be slower than expected. Small guesthouses, hostels and family-run stays are often the best options for meeting people and getting honest advice about beaches, hikes and food.

Keep valuables secure, take care in quiet areas after dark and check weather and sea conditions before heading out. With sensible planning, May gives you the freedom to combine city culture, rainforest walks and memorable Caribbean beaches in one varied and friendly trip.
