March Birdwatching

Why Visit in March?

March is an excellent month for a birdwatching holiday in Trinidad and Tobago. The weather is generally warm and fairly dry, with plenty of sunshine for early starts and comfortable time outdoors. There may be a brief shower, but these often pass quickly and can leave the forest fresh and full of birdsong.

For visiting birdwatchers, the timing is especially appealing. Resident species are active, while some winter visitors may still be present. Longer daylight hours give you time to explore rainforest trails, wetlands and coastal habitats without feeling rushed. It is also a pleasant period for combining wildlife watching with beaches, local food and relaxed island sightseeing.

Trinidad’s Birdlife

Trinidad is widely regarded as one of the Caribbean’s best birdwatching destinations, and March shows its variety beautifully. In the Northern Range, forest reserves and mountain valleys provide opportunities to see hummingbirds, trogons, motmots, parrots and tanagers. The famous Asa Wright Nature Centre is a superb base, with knowledgeable guides and busy feeding stations that bring close views of colourful species.

At lower elevations, the landscape changes to gardens, farmland and open woodland. Look out for keel-billed toucans, raptors circling above the hills and small nectar-feeding birds moving quickly between flowers. Early morning is usually the most rewarding time, when the air is cooler and bird activity is at its peak.

Wetlands and Coast

A visit to the Caroni Swamp is one of the essential experiences on a Trinidad birdwatching holiday. Boat trips travel quietly through mangrove channels, where herons, egrets, cormorants and kingfishers can be seen along the banks. As the day ends, scarlet ibis gather in the trees, creating one of the island’s most memorable wildlife spectacles.

Tobago offers a different pace and a wonderfully accessible range of habitats. The Main Ridge Forest Reserve is rich in forest birds, while coastal areas and wetlands attract frigatebirds, pelicans, terns and shorebirds. With a local guide, you can explore productive sites efficiently and learn how to identify calls as well as birds.

Planning Your Trip

Pack lightweight clothing, sturdy walking shoes, sun protection and insect repellent. Binoculars are essential, and a small notebook or birding app is useful for recording sightings. Neutral-coloured clothing helps you blend into the surroundings, although there is no need to overcomplicate your kit.

Arrange guided excursions in advance, particularly for popular reserves and specialist birdwatching sites. A good guide can locate shy species, explain local habitats and make the experience much more relaxed. Allow time between outings too: Trinidad and Tobago rewards visitors who pause for a swim, sample a roadside meal or simply listen to the forest.

More Than Birdwatching

March makes it easy to build a varied Caribbean holiday around your birdwatching plans. After a morning in the rainforest, you could enjoy a leisurely lunch, visit a historic town or spend the afternoon on a sandy beach. Tobago is particularly well suited to this balance, with calm bays and scenic coastal drives close to excellent birding locations.

Whether you are an experienced birder or simply curious about tropical wildlife, Trinidad and Tobago offers memorable encounters without demanding a fast-paced itinerary. Choose March for warm weather, lively habitats and the chance to discover two distinctive islands through their remarkable birdlife.
