USVI Fishing February

February Fishing Conditions

February is an excellent month for a fishing holiday in the United States Virgin Islands. The weather is usually warm, bright and pleasantly breezy, with far less humidity than later in the year. Sea conditions are often comfortable for a day on the water, whether you are an experienced angler or trying deep-sea fishing for the first time.

St Thomas, St John and St Croix each offer a slightly different fishing experience. You can book a half-day trip close to shore, spend a full day chasing larger game fish offshore, or try a relaxed reef excursion around sheltered bays. February’s dependable conditions make it easier to plan, although your skipper will always choose the safest and most productive grounds on the day.

What You Could Catch

Offshore waters around the US Virgin Islands can attract wahoo, mahi-mahi and tuna in February. These fast, powerful fish provide exciting sport and are often found around current lines, floating debris or areas where baitfish gather. Depending on the location and conditions, there may also be opportunities to target billfish, including sailfish and marlin.

Closer to land, reef and bottom-fishing trips can produce snapper, grouper and other smaller species. This is a good choice for families or anyone who prefers a shorter, gentler trip. Ask your charter company what is running locally, as catches vary between islands and can change with the weather, tides and sea temperature.

Choosing Your Charter

Local charter skippers know the waters exceptionally well and can match the trip to your interests. When comparing boats, check whether tackle, bait, refreshments and licences are included, and ask about the number of guests on board. A smaller group often means more personal guidance and more time with a rod in your hands.

St Thomas has a wide choice of operators and is convenient for visitors staying near Charlotte Amalie or Red Hook. St Croix is especially appealing for anglers who enjoy a quieter atmosphere and longer stretches of coastline. From St John, trips can combine beautiful scenery with fishing around nearby reefs, although some offshore excursions may be arranged from neighbouring St Thomas.

Making the Most of February

Book early if you are travelling during the February winter-sun season, particularly around school holidays. Wear lightweight clothing, bring sun protection and take a light layer for the early start when the breeze can feel cool. Sunglasses with a retainer, non-slip footwear and motion-sickness tablets are also sensible additions.

Fishing is only part of the appeal. After your trip, you can swim in clear water, explore historic streets, enjoy fresh seafood or watch the sunset from a waterfront bar. With warm days, lively marine life and spectacular island scenery, February offers a rewarding way to experience the United States Virgin Islands from the sea.
