Magens Bay Views

Magens Bay is one of the easiest places in the United States Virgin Islands to see why Saint Thomas photographs so well. The wide sweep of pale sand, calm turquoise water and green hills creates a classic Caribbean scene, whether you are taking a quick phone photo or planning a carefully framed holiday post.

Arrive earlier in the day for softer light and a quieter stretch of beach. From the viewpoint above the bay, you can capture the full curve of the shoreline, while down by the water a paddleboard or a pair of sun loungers adds a relaxed sense of scale. Bring a waterproof phone case if you plan to swim between shots.

Charlotte Amalie Streets

Charlotte Amalie offers a different side of the islands, with historic buildings, colourful doors and atmospheric lanes that are full of character. Wander around the old town and look for Danish colonial details, red-roofed buildings and quiet corners away from the main shopping streets.

The 99 Steps are a popular photo stop, but the surrounding streets often provide the most natural images. Try photographing early, before the town becomes busy, or return in the late afternoon when the light warms the stonework. Comfortable shoes are useful, as the streets and steps can be uneven.

Mountain Top Panorama

For a broad island panorama, head up into the hills around Mountain Top. The elevated view looks across Magens Bay and the surrounding islands, making it an excellent place for a landscape photograph that shows the scale and beauty of the destination.

Visibility is usually best after a clear morning, although passing clouds can add interest to the sky. Take a moment to enjoy the view rather than rushing through it, and use the railings and nearby tropical plants to frame your image. This is also a convenient stop when exploring the island by car.

Trunk Bay Sunsets

Saint John’s Trunk Bay is a memorable place to finish a day of island exploring. The bright water and famous offshore cay are beautiful in daylight, but the beach takes on a quieter mood as the sun drops towards the horizon.

Bring a small towel and arrive in time to settle on the sand before sunset.
