Start with Sunrise

January is an excellent time to explore the United States Virgin Islands, especially if you want beautiful photographs without spending every day searching for the perfect light. The weather is typically warm and comfortable, with bright skies and a refreshing breeze, making early mornings ideal for capturing the islands at their most peaceful.

On Saint Thomas, head to Magens Bay before breakfast. The curved beach, calm turquoise water and green hills create one of the Caribbean’s most recognisable views. Arrive early for soft golden light, then stay for a quiet swim while the beach gradually comes to life.

City Views and Harbours

For a classic Saint Thomas photograph, make your way to a viewpoint above Charlotte Amalie. From here, the town’s colourful rooftops spread towards the harbour, where ferries, sailing boats and cruise ships add movement to the scene. The elevated view works particularly well in the morning, when the air is often clear and the colours look crisp.

Spend some time wandering the historic streets afterwards. Painted buildings, old stone steps and small shopfronts provide plenty of detail for photographs, while the town’s lively atmosphere gives your feed a sense of place. Look beyond the obvious landmarks and notice the shutters, balconies and tropical plants that make Charlotte Amalie distinctive.

Colourful Christiansted

Saint Croix offers a different pace and plenty of Instagram-worthy locations. In Christiansted, the historic waterfront is lined with colourful buildings and elegant old architecture. The compact centre is easy to explore on foot, so you can take photographs without rushing between attractions.

Try visiting in the late afternoon, when the low sun brings out the warm tones of the buildings. A short walk along the harbour can produce a mixture of wide views and close-up details, from weathered doors to brightly painted walls. It is also a lovely place to pause for an iced drink and watch boats move across the water.

Beach and Reef Colours

Saint John is hard to beat for natural scenery, with much of the island protected by Virgin Islands National Park. Trunk Bay is a popular choice because its white sand, clear water and forested hills look striking from the shore. If you enjoy underwater photography, the marked snorkelling trail adds another dimension to your January holiday.

For a quieter image, explore one of the island’s smaller beaches and frame the view with overhanging palms or rocks. Bring a waterproof phone pouch if you plan to swim, and avoid taking fragile equipment into the sea without proper protection. The best photographs often come from simply slowing down and waiting for the water to settle.

Golden Hour in January

Finish the day with sunset photographs from the western side of an island or a beach facing open water. January evenings are generally comfortable, and the sun’s warm glow can turn the sea and clouds rich shades of orange, pink and violet. Arrive early enough to choose a clear foreground and watch how the light changes.

Keep your images natural by using the colours and shapes already around you. A simple silhouette of a palm, a boat or a person walking along the sand can say more than an over-edited image. Most importantly, put the phone down occasionally and enjoy the view properly; the United States Virgin Islands are memorable even when there is no camera in hand.
