April in the Virgin Islands

April is an excellent time for a nature holiday in the United States Virgin Islands. Walking Through Island Landscapes

St John is a natural starting point for exploring the islands on foot. Much of the island forms part of Virgin Islands National Park, where trails lead through dry forest, coastal woodland and low hills. The Reef Bay Trail is one of the best-known walks, passing historic plantation remains and offering a glimpse of the island’s changing vegetation.

For an easier outing, choose a short coastal trail near one of the park’s beaches. Start early to enjoy cooler conditions and quieter paths, and take plenty of water, sun protection and sturdy footwear. From higher ground, the views across small bays and neighbouring islands make even a gentle walk feel memorable.

Reefs and Marine Wildlife

April is a great month for seeing the United States Virgin Islands from the water. Calm conditions often make snorkelling enjoyable, particularly around St John’s protected bays and the reefs near St Croix. You may spot brightly coloured fish, sea fans, rays and green sea turtles moving through the clear shallows.

Boat trips are available from the main islands and can take you to quieter snorkelling areas that are difficult to reach from shore. Buck Island Reef National Monument, off St Croix, is a popular choice for its protected coral ecosystem and underwater trail. Always follow local guidance, avoid touching coral and give marine animals plenty of space.

Beaches with a Difference

The islands’ beaches are not only places for swimming and sunbathing. At Maho Bay on St John, visitors may see turtles close to shore, while Salt Pond Bay has a peaceful setting suited to a picnic and a leisurely swim. On St Croix, Sandy Point National Wildlife Refuge is an important nesting area for leatherback turtles, although access can be restricted to protect them.

April also brings excellent opportunities for a simple day outdoors: pack fruit, sandwiches and water, then settle beneath the shade with a good book. Check beach conditions before setting out, as some locations have limited facilities and mobile coverage can be unreliable.
