USVI Nature Holidays

December in Paradise

December is a wonderful time to enjoy a nature holiday in the United States Virgin Islands. The weather is usually warm, bright and pleasantly comfortable, making it ideal for exploring beyond the beach. With clear seas, green hills and a relaxed island atmosphere, St John, St Thomas and St Croix offer plenty of outdoor experiences.

This is also a popular month to visit, particularly around Christmas and New Year, so it is wise to plan accommodation and excursions early. Even during the livelier festive period, you can find peaceful corners where the only sounds are birdsong, rustling palms and the gentle movement of the sea.

Reefs and Beaches

The US Virgin Islands are a natural playground for anyone who enjoys being in the water. Warm December seas and excellent visibility create superb conditions for snorkelling, with colourful fish, sea turtles and coral reefs found close to shore in many bays. Trunk Bay on St John is particularly well known for its underwater trail, while Maho Bay is a good place to look for turtles.

There is much to enjoy above the water too. Spend a morning swimming in a quiet cove, then follow the shoreline to a viewpoint or settle beneath the shade of a sea grape tree. Pack reef-safe sun cream, drinking water and a mask if you have one, although equipment can be hired locally.

Island Trails

Virgin Islands National Park covers much of St John and is the natural focus of many December holidays. Its paths lead through dry tropical woodland, past old plantation ruins and towards beaches with remarkable views across the Caribbean. The Reef Bay Trail is a rewarding choice for walkers who want a closer look at the island’s plants, history and wildlife.

Start walks early in the day, when temperatures are cooler and the light is especially clear. Sturdy shoes are useful, as some trails are rocky, and a local guide can add detail about medicinal plants, native trees and the island’s past. Keep an eye out for wild donkeys, iguanas and colourful birds along the way.

Wildlife and Sunsets

December is a rewarding month for nature watching across the islands. Sea turtles may be seen in sheltered bays, while pelicans and brown boobies are often spotted along the coast. On St Croix, Buck Island Reef National Monument offers memorable boat trips, with protected waters, snorkelling sites and opportunities to see marine life in its natural setting.

Finish the day at a quiet coastal viewpoint and watch the sun lower over the water. The islands’ evenings are generally mild, so you can linger outdoors over dinner or take a gentle walk beneath a sky full of stars. For travellers seeking warm weather, outdoor adventure and a slower pace, a December nature holiday in the US Virgin Islands is an excellent choice.
