Why February Is Ideal

February is one of the best months for a scuba diving holiday in the BES islands: Bonaire, Sint Eustatius and Saba. The weather is generally warm and dry, sea conditions are often settled, and underwater visibility can be excellent. It is a comfortable time to spend long days in the water without the heavy humidity found later in the year.

Water temperatures are usually around 26°C, so many divers are happy with a light wetsuit. Above the surface, daytime temperatures sit pleasantly in the high twenties. Whether you are planning relaxed shore dives, a liveaboard-style adventure or a few guided descents, February offers a reliable combination of sunshine and good diving conditions.

Bonaire’s Easy Diving

Bonaire is famous for straightforward shore diving, and February is a superb time to explore its protected reefs. Many sites are close to the road, making it easy to plan two or three dives at your own pace. Look for the distinctive yellow stones that mark popular entry points, then slip into warm, clear water filled with parrotfish, angelfish and colourful reef life.

The island’s calm western coast is particularly suitable for independent divers, while local operators can arrange boat trips to sites that are less accessible from land. Night dives are another highlight. As the sun disappears, octopus, lobsters and hunting reef fish become more active, giving familiar sites a completely different character.

Sint Eustatius Underwater

Sint Eustatius, often known as Statia, offers a more rugged diving experience. Its marine park surrounds volcanic slopes, reefs and historic wrecks, with underwater scenery that changes from coral-covered walls to black volcanic rock. February’s generally favourable conditions make it a good month for exploring this varied seascape with a local guide.

The island’s reefs attract turtles, rays and large schools of tropical fish, while the wreck sites add a sense of discovery to a dive. Statia is quieter than many better-known Caribbean destinations, which means you can often enjoy a peaceful descent with plenty of time to observe the details.

Saba’s Dramatic Reefs

Saba is the choice for divers who enjoy striking underwater topography. The island rises steeply from the sea, and its protected marine park includes pinnacles, walls, swim-throughs and deep coral formations. Boat diving is the norm, and experienced local crews know how to choose sites that suit the day’s conditions and your experience.

February can bring clear water and impressive visibility around Saba’s deeper sites. Expect encounters with turtles, reef sharks, stingrays and dense schools of fish, although marine life is never guaranteed. The diving can be more challenging than Bonaire, so listen carefully to your guide and make sure your certification and recent experience match the planned sites.

Planning Your Trip

Pack reef-safe sun protection, a rash vest, a light wetsuit and a compact torch for night or wreck dives. Bring certification details and logbook information if you have them, particularly if you want to join deeper or more advanced trips. Dive centres can usually provide tanks and equipment, but booking ahead is sensible during the popular February travel period.

Allow time between your final dive and your flight, and do not overlook the islands above the water. Bonaire has salt flats and flamingos, Statia has historic trails, and Saba offers rewarding mountain walks. With warm weather, inviting seas and three very different diving personalities, a February holiday in the BES islands can be as relaxed or adventurous as you choose.
