Curaçao Birdwatching

Birdwatching in March

March is an excellent time for a Curaçao birdwatching holiday. The island is warm, generally dry and easy to explore, with comfortable conditions for early-morning walks and relaxed afternoons beside the sea. Clear skies and gentle trade winds make it a pleasure to spend time outdoors, whether you are an experienced birder or simply enjoy spotting wildlife while travelling.

Curaçao’s semi-arid landscape feels very different from a lush tropical rainforest. You will find thorny scrub, cacti, salt pans, rocky hills and quiet coastal inlets, each offering its own selection of birds. Take binoculars, a notebook and plenty of water, then allow yourself time to pause; some of the best sightings happen when you stand quietly and watch the landscape come to life.

Salt Pans and Flamingos

The salt pans around Jan Kok and the nearby wetlands are among the most rewarding places to visit. Greater flamingos are the obvious attraction, often standing in shallow water or moving slowly across the bright, open flats. Their pink colouring stands out against the pale salt and blue sky, creating one of Curaçao’s most memorable wildlife scenes.

Look beyond the flamingos and you may see herons, egrets, sandpipers and other waders feeding along the water’s edge. Early morning is usually the best time, when temperatures are pleasant and birds are active. Keep a respectful distance and use binoculars rather than approaching the birds, especially when they are feeding or resting.

Forests, Cacti and Parrots

For a change of scenery, explore the dry woodland and cactus-covered hills around Christoffel National Park. Trails and viewpoints give you the chance to see colourful parakeets, hummingbirds, flycatchers and Caribbean mockingbirds. The island’s distinctive yellow-shouldered Amazon parrot is a particularly special sight, although it takes patience and a little luck to find one.

Set out shortly after sunrise, when birds are calling and the heat is still manageable. Listen for movement in the trees, check flowering plants for hummingbirds and scan open branches before moving on. A local guide can make a real difference by recognising calls and knowing where recent sightings have been reported.

Coastal Birdwatching

Curaçao’s coastline adds another dimension to a March birdwatching trip. Rocky shores, sheltered bays and small beaches attract gulls, terns and waders, while seabirds can often be seen gliding above the water. The area around Shete Boka National Park is especially enjoyable, combining dramatic coastal scenery with opportunities to watch birds in open surroundings.

Plan a mixed day that includes wildlife and local life. After a morning in the countryside, stop for lunch in a seaside village or visit Willemstad’s colourful streets in the afternoon. With warm weather, varied habitats and plenty of independent places to explore, Curaçao makes birdwatching feel like a natural part of a wider Caribbean holiday.
