August Birdwatching

Birdwatching in August

Curaçao is a rewarding choice for an August birdwatching holiday, especially if you enjoy warm weather, varied scenery and the freedom to explore at your own pace. The island’s dry climate means plenty of sunshine, while its cactus-studded countryside, salt pans, mangroves and coastal wetlands offer a surprising range of habitats.

August is a lively time for birdwatching in Curaçao. Resident species are active throughout the day, and visiting birds may still be seen around ponds, lagoons and sheltered coastal areas. Early starts are best, when temperatures are cooler and birds are feeding, but you can also find excellent sightings in the late afternoon.

Best Places to Explore

The salt pans around Jan Kok and the Willemstad area are among the most appealing places to look for birds. Greater flamingos are the headline attraction, often standing in shallow water or moving slowly across the bright salt flats. Look more closely and you may spot herons, egrets, sandpipers and other waders along the water’s edge.

West Curaçao offers a different experience, with dry woodland, rocky hills and quiet bays. Around Christoffel National Park, keep watch for Caribbean specialties such as the yellow-shouldered parrot, while the scrub can produce flycatchers, doves and hummingbirds. A local guide can help you identify calls and reach the best viewpoints without disturbing nesting areas.

The island’s gardens and hotel grounds should not be overlooked. Flowering shrubs attract hummingbirds and bananaquits, while shaded trees can provide welcome activity during the warmer middle of the day. Even a short walk near your accommodation may add several species to your holiday list.

Birds You May See

Curaçao’s birdlife reflects its position in the southern Caribbean. Alongside flamingos, likely sightings include brown pelicans, magnificent frigatebirds, tricoloured herons, Caribbean elaenias and pearly-eyed thrashers. The island is also home to the distinctive trupial, a bold orange-and-black bird often seen around open ground and gardens.

August’s bright conditions make colours and silhouettes easy to pick out, although strong midday light can be demanding for photographers. Pack binoculars, a hat and plenty of water, and wear light clothing with sturdy shoes. A small notebook or birding app is useful for recording sightings and checking unfamiliar calls later.

Planning Your Holiday

For a comfortable Curaçao birdwatching holiday in August, combine organised excursions with independent exploring. Boat trips and guided nature tours can reveal coastal birds that are difficult to find from land, while a hire car gives you access to the island’s quieter western habitats and viewpoints.

Allow time for Curaçao beyond birdwatching, too. After a morning in the field, you can swim in a sheltered cove, explore colourful Willemstad or enjoy fresh seafood beside the water. With reliable sunshine, varied habitats and plenty of accessible wildlife, August is an excellent month to discover Curaçao through its birds.
