Curaçao Birdwatching

Why Visit in November

November is a rewarding time for a birdwatching holiday in Curaçao. The island is warm, bright and generally less busy than during the main winter season, so you can enjoy its bird-rich landscapes at an easy pace. Daytime temperatures are usually around the high twenties Celsius, making early starts especially pleasant.

This month can also bring passing showers, particularly as the island moves towards its wetter period. The rain is often brief, leaving fresh pools and greener patches that attract birds. Pack light clothing, sun protection and a waterproof layer, then make the most of the comfortable conditions between showers.

Flamingos at Jan Kok

One of Curaçao’s most memorable birdwatching experiences is a visit to the salt pans near Jan Kok. Greater flamingos gather in the shallow water, where their pink colouring stands out against the pale salt flats and blue sky. Watch from a respectful distance and you may see them feeding, preening or moving together in a slow, graceful line.

The area is also useful for spotting other waders and coastal birds. Bring binoculars, a hat and plenty of water, as there is limited shade around the pans. Early morning or late afternoon offers softer light and cooler temperatures, as well as a better chance of seeing birds when they are most active.

Birds in the Wild

Curaçao’s dry scrub and cactus-filled countryside support a surprisingly varied bird population. Look out for bright yellow tropical orioles, burrowing owls, brown pelicans and tiny hummingbirds hovering beside flowers. The island’s familiar troupials are also a pleasure to see, with bold colouring and confident behaviour around gardens and open country.

Westpunt and the quieter roads around the island are excellent places to explore with a local guide. A guide can help you recognise calls, find well-hidden species and choose sites according to the weather. Even a slow walk near your accommodation can produce rewarding sightings, especially around flowering shrubs and fruiting trees.

Planning Your Trip

Base yourself near Willemstad for easy access to restaurants, museums and the western birding sites, or choose a quieter stay closer to the countryside. A hire car gives you the freedom to reach salt pans, beaches and nature areas before the heat builds. Allow time between outings to enjoy Curaçao’s colourful streets and relaxed island atmosphere.

Responsible birdwatching makes the experience better for everyone. Keep to marked paths, avoid disturbing nesting birds and never feed wildlife. With an early start, a good pair of binoculars and a little patience, November in Curaçao can deliver memorable sightings in landscapes that feel wonderfully different from home.
