Curaçao Birdwatching

Birdwatching in May

May is a rewarding month for a Curaçao birdwatching holiday. The island is warm, bright and refreshingly easy to explore, while the quieter pace outside the main resorts gives you time to watch wildlife properly. Early mornings are especially enjoyable, with birds becoming active before the midday heat settles in.

Curaçao’s dry climate creates a distinctive landscape of thorny scrub, cacti, salt pans and sheltered bays. This varied habitat attracts an impressive range of resident and visiting birds, so even a short drive can bring a new sighting. Bring binoculars, a hat and plenty of water, then set out with a relaxed sense of curiosity.

Salt Pans and Flamingos

The salt pans around Jan Kok and Sint Willibrordus are among the best-known places for birdwatching in Curaçao. Depending on water levels and conditions, you may see Caribbean flamingos feeding in the shallows, their pink plumage standing out against the pale landscape. Keep a respectful distance and use binoculars rather than approaching the birds.

These open wetlands also provide opportunities to spot herons, egrets, sandpipers and other waders. May can bring interesting movement through coastal areas, and patient observers are often rewarded as birds arrive, feed or lift off together. The changing light in the morning makes the salt pans particularly pleasant for photography.

Cactus Scrub Wildlife

Move inland and Curaçao’s cactus-covered countryside offers a completely different birdwatching experience. Look and listen for the island’s bright yellow orioles, lively bananaquits and tropical mockingbirds. The crested bobwhite may appear briefly among the low vegetation, while hummingbirds can be surprisingly easy to miss as they dart between flowers.

One of the most memorable birds to find is the bare-eyed pigeon, a characteristic Caribbean species with a distinctive call. You may also notice pearly-eyed thrashers and tiny warblers moving through bushes near gardens or water sources. A local guide can make a real difference, helping you identify calls and choose locations suited to the day’s conditions.

Coastal Birdwatching

Curaçao’s coastline is well suited to combining birdwatching with a day beside the sea. Rocky headlands, coves and quiet beaches provide views of frigatebirds, pelicans, terns and gulls. At Playa Lagun and other sheltered spots, watch the cliffs and waterline carefully, particularly when the wind brings birds closer to shore.

For a more varied day, visit a nature reserve or take a boat trip along the coast. Keep your camera ready, but allow yourself time simply to enjoy the setting: turquoise water, dry hills and the sound of wings overhead. In May, the warm weather makes an early excursion followed by a swim an excellent way to spend the day.

Planning Your Trip

Start outings at first light, when temperatures are comfortable and birds are most active. A hire car is useful for reaching salt pans, plantations and quieter countryside, although organised birdwatching tours are a good option if you would prefer expert guidance. Pack light, breathable clothing, closed shoes and sun protection.

Allow plenty of flexibility in your itinerary. A slow morning at one promising site can be more rewarding than rushing between several locations, and Curaçao’s restaurants, beaches and historic Willemstad are close enough to add variety. With its accessible wildlife and welcoming atmosphere, May is an excellent time to discover birdwatching holidays in Curaçao.
