Curaçao Birdwatching

Birdwatching in June

June is a rewarding month for a Curaçao birdwatching holiday. The island’s warm, generally dry climate makes it easy to spend long mornings outdoors, while the quieter start of summer often brings a relaxed feel to nature reserves and coastal tracks. With a little planning, you can enjoy a varied list of resident birds without rushing from one site to another.

Curaçao’s landscapes are especially appealing to birdwatchers because they change quickly. Dry woodland, cactus-covered hills, salt pans, lagoons and sandy coast are all within reach, creating opportunities to see different species in a single day. Early starts are worthwhile, when temperatures are comfortable and birds are most active.

Best Places to Explore

The salt pans around Jan Kok and the Willemstad area are among the island’s best-known birding locations. American flamingos are the headline attraction, often standing in shallow water or moving in small groups across the pink and grey landscape. Look more closely and you may also spot herons, egrets, sandpipers and other waders feeding along the edges.

At the western end of Curaçao, wetlands and coastal sites offer a different experience. Shete Boka National Park is better known for dramatic shorelines, but its scrub and rocky habitats can produce interesting sightings between visits to the viewpoints. Inland roads near plantations and kunuku countryside are useful for spotting doves, hummingbirds, parakeets and flycatchers.

Birds You May See

Curaçao has several memorable local birds, including the bright yellow-shouldered Amazon parrot, known locally as the lora. It is not guaranteed on every outing, but patient observers may hear its calls before seeing it flying over cactus scrub or feeding in trees. A local guide can greatly improve your chances and help you understand the conservation work protecting this special species.

Other regular sightings can include the Caribbean parakeet, brown pelican, bananaquit, tropical mockingbird and striking troupial. Along the coast, keep watch for frigatebirds and brown boobies, while gardens and hotel grounds may reveal smaller species that are easy to miss in open country.

Planning Your Holiday

For comfortable June birdwatching, pack lightweight long-sleeved clothing, a wide-brimmed hat, sun cream, sturdy shoes and plenty of water. Binoculars are essential, and a small notebook or mobile birding app is useful for recording sightings. The midday sun can be intense, so plan the most active walks for early morning and late afternoon.

Hiring a car gives you freedom to explore, although guided excursions are an excellent choice if you want help identifying calls and finding less obvious habitats. Allow time to enjoy Curaçao beyond birding too, from colourful Willemstad and quiet beaches to local food served with a relaxed island welcome. A June birdwatching holiday can be both productive and wonderfully unhurried.
