July Birdwatching

Birdwatching in July

Curaçao is a rewarding choice for a birdwatching holiday in July, especially if you enjoy combining wildlife with warm weather and relaxed island days. The island sits outside the main hurricane belt, so conditions are generally sunny, breezy and dependable. Early mornings are the best time to explore, before the heat builds and the birds become less active.

July brings a distinctly dry-season feel to Curaçao. The landscape is shaped by cactus, thorny scrub, rocky hills and pockets of greener vegetation, creating a variety of habitats in a relatively compact area. With a little patience, you can spot colourful island residents close to roads, walking trails and quiet coastal areas.

Where to Watch

One of the most enjoyable places to begin is Christoffel National Park in the west of the island. Its hills and dry woodland attract Caribbean birds, while the higher viewpoints offer wide views across the surrounding countryside. Set off soon after sunrise, take plenty of water and listen carefully for calls among the scrub.

The island’s wetlands and salt pans are equally appealing. Around Jan Kok and the salt flats near Jan Thiel, flamingos may be seen feeding or resting, often standing out against the pale landscape. Coastal lagoons and sheltered bays can also produce sightings of herons, terns and other waterbirds, particularly when the morning is quiet.

Birds You May See

Curaçao is well known for its striking endemic birds. Keep watch for the yellow-shouldered amazon, a rare parrot associated with the island, although sightings are never guaranteed and are best enjoyed with a local guide who knows its habits. The colourful troupial is more regularly encountered, often perched prominently and showing its orange, black and blue plumage.

You may also see Caribbean mockingbirds, brown pelicans, bananaquits, hummingbirds and pearly-eyed thrashers. Along the coast, frigatebirds and magnificent frigatebirds can be seen gliding on the trade winds. A notebook or birding app is useful, as even a short walk can produce a varied list of species.

Planning Your Holiday

July temperatures are hot, so comfortable footwear, a hat, sun cream and a refillable water bottle are essential. Lightweight clothing in neutral colours is practical, while binoculars with good low-light performance will make early-morning sightings more enjoyable. A small camera is welcome, but give birds plenty of space and avoid playing recorded calls.

Many visitors combine birdwatching with swimming, snorkelling and exploring Willemstad’s colourful streets. Hiring a car makes it easier to reach national parks, salt pans and quieter corners of the island, while a specialist birdwatching guide can add local knowledge and improve your chances of finding less familiar species. With sunny July weather and wonderfully varied habitats, Curaçao offers a friendly, manageable introduction to Caribbean birdwatching.
