Diving in July

Guadeloupe is a superb choice for a scuba diving holiday in July, with warm seas, lively marine life and plenty of underwater variety. This French Caribbean island offers sheltered bays, volcanic scenery and easy access to some of the best dive sites in the Lesser Antilles.

July falls within the warmer, wetter season, but showers are often brief and the sunshine usually returns quickly. Sea temperatures are comfortable for long dives, while visibility can be excellent, particularly around the quieter coastal sites and offshore reefs.

The Cousteau Reserve

For many visitors, the highlight of scuba diving in Guadeloupe is the Cousteau Reserve, situated around Pigeon Island on the west coast of Basse-Terre. The reserve is known for clear water, coral-covered rocks and a good mix of shallow and deeper sites, making it suitable for both newer divers and experienced visitors.

Expect to see colourful reef fish, moray eels, turtles and sponges clinging to the underwater walls. Some dive centres also offer drift dives and night dives, giving you the chance to see a different side of this protected marine environment after sunset.

Marine Life Encounters

July is a rewarding month for spotting Guadeloupe’s marine life. Green and hawksbill turtles are regular visitors to the reefs, often gliding calmly through the water or resting among sea grass. Large shoals of fish create movement across the reef, while trumpetfish, butterflyfish and angelfish add flashes of colour.

Look closely in crevices and beneath ledges for lobster, crabs and small reef creatures. The volcanic underwater landscape also creates interesting swim-throughs, slopes and walls, so even a familiar site can feel different on every dive.

Planning Your Trip

Several established dive centres operate around Basse-Terre and the west coast, offering equipment hire, guided dives and courses. If you are travelling in July, it is sensible to reserve popular trips in advance, especially if you want to visit the Cousteau Reserve or arrange a first-time scuba experience.

Pack reef-friendly sun cream, a light waterproof layer and a certified copy of your diving qualification. Allow time between your final dive and flying home, and listen to local instructors about currents, weather and the best sites for the day.

Beyond the Reefs

Guadeloupe makes it easy to combine diving with a wider island holiday. After a morning beneath the waves, you can enjoy Creole food, explore rainforest trails on Basse-Terre or relax on a sandy beach. The island’s two main wings also offer a pleasing contrast, from lush volcanic landscapes to the drier scenery of Grande-Terre.

With warm water, fascinating wildlife and a friendly local diving scene, Guadeloupe in July is an excellent option for a Caribbean scuba diving holiday. Whether you are learning your first skills or searching for memorable reef dives, the island offers plenty to discover above and below the surface.
