Diving in August

Guadeloupe is a rewarding scuba diving destination in August, when warm seas, bright underwater life and relaxed Caribbean days come together. The French island is shaped like a butterfly, with excellent dive sites around both Basse-Terre and Grande-Terre, although the volcanic west side is usually the main focus for divers.

Water temperatures are typically around 28°C, so a lightweight wetsuit or rash vest is often all you need. Visibility can be very good, particularly away from busy coastal areas, and the calm, warm conditions make August suitable for beginners as well as experienced divers. If you are planning a Guadeloupe holiday with non-divers, there are plenty of beaches, walks and restaurants to enjoy between trips out on the boat.

Where to Dive

The waters around Bouillante and the Cousteau Reserve are among Guadeloupe’s best-known diving areas. This protected marine environment lies near Pigeon Island and offers a mixture of coral gardens, rocky walls, pinnacles and sheltered sites. Underwater, you may spot angelfish, parrotfish, trumpetfish, moray eels and turtles moving through the reef.

Basse-Terre’s west coast also gives easy access to sites around Malendure, making it a practical base for a diving holiday. Grande-Terre has attractive beaches and lively resorts, but divers often choose to stay on Basse-Terre to reduce travelling time. Local dive centres can recommend sites according to your experience and the day’s sea conditions.

What You May See

August brings plenty of activity beneath the surface. Warm water supports colourful reef fish, while turtles are a familiar sight around some of the protected sites. Look closely in crevices and beneath ledges for lobsters, crabs and shy moray eels, and keep an eye on the blue water for larger passing species.

The volcanic underwater landscape adds variety to each dive. Lava formations create swim-throughs, drop-offs and rocky shelters, with coral and sponges adding colour to the dark stone. Snorkellers can enjoy many shallow areas too, so a boat trip can work well for couples or families with mixed interests.

Planning Your Trip

August is part of the wetter season in Guadeloupe, and brief tropical showers are possible. They often pass quickly, leaving the air fresh and the afternoon ready for the beach, but it is sensible to keep some flexibility in your diving plans. Dive operators make daily decisions based on wind, waves and visibility.

Book your preferred dive centre and accommodation ahead of time, especially if you need a refresher course, guided dives or equipment hire. Choose a reputable operator with qualified instructors, and remember to allow enough time after your final dive before flying. With warm water, fascinating marine life and a welcoming island atmosphere, Guadeloupe scuba diving in August can be the highlight of your Caribbean escape.
