Guadeloupe Diving December

Why Dive Guadeloupe in December

December is an excellent month for a Guadeloupe scuba diving holiday. The wet season is easing, the days are warm and the sea is often calm enough for comfortable boat trips along the coast. Water temperatures stay around 27°C, so most divers are happy in a light wetsuit.

Visibility can be very good at this time of year, often making it easy to appreciate the reefs, walls and volcanic scenery beneath the surface. With winter weather arriving in the UK, Guadeloupe offers a welcome change: bright skies, warm beaches and plenty of time in the water.

Top Dive Areas

The west coast of Basse-Terre is the main focus for scuba diving in Guadeloupe. The famous Cousteau Reserve, around Pigeon Island, is known for clear water, coral gardens and dramatic underwater rock formations. It is a rewarding area for both beginners and experienced divers, with sheltered sites and varied marine life.

Further south, the coast around Bouillante provides easy access to reefs, pinnacles and deeper sites. You may see colourful reef fish, moray eels, turtles and rays, while patient divers sometimes spot seahorses or small creatures hiding among the coral. Local dive centres know the best sites for the day and can match trips to your experience.

What You Might See

Guadeloupe’s underwater world is lively without feeling overcrowded. Schools of tropical fish move across the reef, parrotfish graze on coral and angelfish add flashes of colour as you explore. Turtles are a particularly memorable sight, especially around seagrass beds and quieter reef areas.

December can also bring encounters with larger animals in open water. Sightings are never guaranteed, but eagle rays, reef sharks and dolphins may all appear. Above the seabed, healthy coral, sponge-covered rocks and volcanic formations provide plenty to look at on every dive.

Planning Your Diving Holiday

Most Guadeloupe dive centres offer guided boat dives, equipment hire and introductory experiences for visitors who are new to scuba diving. Certified divers should bring proof of qualification and a logbook if available, although centres can usually advise on suitable sites after a short chat about your experience.

Allow time between diving and flying, and remember that December is a popular month for Caribbean holidays. Booking accommodation and dive trips in advance is sensible, particularly around Christmas and New Year. Staying near Bouillante or the Cousteau Reserve keeps you close to the best west-coast sites.

More Than Scuba Diving

Guadeloupe is easy to enjoy between dives. Spend a quiet afternoon on a sandy beach, explore rainforest trails on Basse-Terre or visit a local market for fresh fruit, spices and Creole dishes. The island’s French influence also means you will find excellent bakeries, seafood restaurants and relaxed cafés.

For a December break that combines warm weather, fascinating marine life and plenty of choice on land, Guadeloupe is a strong option. Its clear Caribbean waters and welcoming dive centres make it an especially appealing destination for a winter scuba diving holiday.
